1. Briefly state the five traditional reasons listed by the author Hettinger for why it is unfair not to hire the most qualified person for the job. Do you agree with Hettinger?.

2. The Author newton defines justice in what political sense? What can’t the Ideal of equality ever justify a violation of justice, according to Newton? What conclusion does Newton draw from this regarding the concept of reverse discrimination? Do you agree? Why or why not?
3. Describe contact with the criminal Justice system from the perspective of a white person, and then from the perspective of a black person. Assess any differences you find.
Question one
The following are the reasons stated by Hettinger

The most qualified person has the right to be hired in virtue of superior qualification.

It is wrong not to hire the most qualified on racial discriminatory or other related grounds

Hiring the most qualified person is ensuring efficiency in work

The most qualified person deserves the job in virtue of her superior qualifications

According to the standards set by the society, the most qualifies person should be awarded with the job
Failure to award the most qualified person the job undermines the equal opportunity for a certain class of people, or the people who are being discriminated upon, such as the white males.

I agree with Hettinger that the most qualified person should get the job, and most importantly I base my argument on the fact that failing to give such a person the job discourages people from working hard to get the qualifications. This, eventually, undermines the quality of job that people do because they are done by people who are less qualified  (Allhoff, & Vaidva, 2008).
Question two
In political sense, the author Newton defines justice as embracing of any principle of truth and morality into the practice of a community.  According to Newton, the ideal of equality cannot ever justify a violation of justice because, for example, affirmative action is implemented in the name of ensuring equality but it has ended up violating people’s justice because it has harmed members of certain groups. Therefore, the author concludes that the principles that are applied to ensure equality in the society have denied people their justice, for example because it is a violation of justice to offer a person a job if they are not the most qualified for such a job (Allhoff, & Vaidva, 2008).
