Review of Literature
It is evident that a large amount of literature has been drawn upon. However, the literature drawn upon has not made the case that social media use leads to drug abuse yet this is the claim made. There is a significant difference between a relationship between these two things and claiming one causes the other; this seems to be a central flaw in the conclusions drawn.
How does social media use ‘initiate the youth into drug abuse? Where is the evidence that ‘such environments have been used to influence the yp into alcohol consumption and substance abuse’?
Arguably, there is too much on the history and description of the various social media platforms and not sufficient on policy and practice context or important theoretical underpinnings e.g. on risk and protective factors. The attempt to provide a history of social media is admirably thorough – notwithstanding that it should arguably have been shortened and the space used to develop the argument about the connection between drug use and social media in more careful detail.
The final section should have provided a clear rationale for the research and have restated the research question, aims and objectives; it does not do this. In the lit review, it is good to see an attempt to provide a theoretical perspective that grounds the research and the student has also clearly undertaken independent reading and given some critical thought to the perspectives they have selected.
