Module Title: Structural Analysis and Materials
Assignment Title:
Materials Analysis/Selection
Hand-in Date: 10th March 2016
Introduction
The ability to select materials is a key skill that all engineers should be able to master. This assignment gives students practice in this area by answering some questions about materials selection.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this assignment, you should be able to do the following:
Evaluate, analyse and discuss different loading types (bending, shear) on engineering components in order to ensure that a component can perform satisfactorily during its service life.
Develop materials indices for a variety of loading conditions and applying them in a case study through the use of a computer based package.
The Brief
The assignment is based on the student answering a series of questions. In all cases please use data from Cambridge Engineering Selector.
Question 1
A steel tube, external diameter of 40mm, wall thickness 3mm has a brass rod 15mm diameter inside it. The two materials being joined rigidly at their ends at an ambient temperature of 20°C. Determine the stresses in the two materials:
a) When the temperature is raised to 85°C
b) When a compressive load of 30kN is applied at the increased temperature of 85°C.
Material
Modulus of Elasticity
Coefficient of Expansion
Steel
210 GN/m2
Brass
80 GN/m2
(40 marks)
Question 2
a) A material is required for a turbine blade. Use CES level 3 to select an appropriate material. Discuss your selection methodology. Provide screenshots from CES as evidence.
b) The turbine blade material requires a Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC). Select an appropriate method using CES level 3. Discuss your selection methodology. Provide screenshots from CES as evidence.
(20 marks)
Question 3
A light aircraft requires a tie rod to strengthen its wing. Select an appropriate material indices for
a) A strong, light tie-rod
b) A stiff, light tie-rod
c) Use CES level 3 to select a material for parts a and b above, provide screenshots from CES as evidence.
d) Explain your methodology for each of the above. What other optimisation criteria could be used to reduce the number of materials?
(20 marks)
Submission Requirements
A written report consists of around 1500 words in length, which addresses each of the questions. You should insert only high resolution graphs and images at least 300 Dot Per Inch (DPI) into your report and use Harvard citation style.
