A) identify and briefly summarize the work from the anthology you are responding to;
B) give a personal reaction to that work.
Note:
Responses are a forum for informal response to the literature. In a Response, your first task is to show me you have read the work in question. Your next objective is to show me that you have some intellectual, emotional, moral, philosophical, personal, or other kind of reaction to it. How does the work make you feel? What connections to your life can you see in the work? What did you enjoy or not enjoy about the work? Your response is an initial reaction to the work and does not have to be the last word on the subject. Your response may include questions you have about the work’s meaning or the author’s intent. In a Response, you may make comments which are irrelevant in analytic writing, such as “I liked it.”
What is NOT informal in Responses is the way they are written. All responses should be virtually free of any kind of grammatical/mechanical errors. Responses will be evaluated based on grammatical/mechanical/textual accuracy and coherence. Read all the works assigned for each week and be ready to be quizzed on them; choose five works each week to respond. If no work appeals to you from a particular week’s reading assignments, you may look ahead in the syllabus or go back to works from a previous week’s assignments. You may flip through the book and respond to any work in the anthology, even if it’s not on the list of assigned readings.
Research is not necessary in Responses. This is your personal “reader’s journal”, not a research assignment. Visiting websites about the works or authors is not recommended: I want your words and thoughts, no one else’s.
Sample:
Bobbie Ann Mason’s short story “Shiloh” is about Leroy Moffitt, a DISABLED truck driver, and his wife, Norma Jean. Four months before the story starts, Leroy injured his leg in a highway accident and since then has been constantly at home. Because his job took him out on the road so much, Norma Jean and Leroy were never really together much, even though they’ve been married for many years. I liked the story because it reminded me of my uncle. He used to work outside a lot, but then he had an accident and had to stay at home, and it was really difficult for him and his wife to adjust. There were several things I didn’t understand, though. I don’t get the significance of the Shiloh battlefield, although I understand that it’s a graveyard. I also wonder if at the end Norma Jean is waving, exercising, or going to jump off the bluff into the river at the end and kill herself. I feel sorry for both of them; the story made me feel that marriage is sometimes hard no matter how much you love each other.
