Those who have faith have it after surrendering their logic given that the two are incompatible. This explains why people will kill based on their faith that they are doing God’s will. If a person was to think for self, then reason would be applied based on a free mind and a free will. This is not the case for those who have faith.
The best way example of how faith operates in the absence of faith is religion. There are many religions that teach the concept of going to heaven. Many have taken away their own lives with the faith that they will go to heaven. A philosopher would wonder what the reasons that inform such a theory and there would be no evidence except for flimsy excuses about hearing voices and what have you. Reason is about making decisions that are based on analyzed data and picking on the most logical conclusion. Another example of the incompatibility between faith and religion is when one question why God would let innocent people suffer, or children get mistreated- faith requires the believe to only belief as “God’s ways cannot be understood by man”. This is opposed to the reason which believes that man has the potential to understand anything that happens in his world (Locke, 2002).
There are times when a man does not have enough evidence to make a reasonable conclusion. Reason is very demanding on the facts and conclusions must be based on enough evidence. In cases where there is not enough evidence, reason chooses to hold a tentative conclusion until more evidence can be availed. An example is when one reads in the news of the murder of a murder that happened in his or her locality. Suddenly, a person remembers that someone he/she dislike was also in the area where the murder happened. Reason will then remind a person that millions of people were also in the given area. It will also remind a person that you do not have enough evidence of motive. The conclusion may be that a person waits to know of the person had the motive or the opportunity commit the murder. Such a conclusion would be tentative (not wholeheartedly) and informed by reason (Russell, 1990). Another person who bases his decision on faith will make a wholehearted decision irrespective f the evidence.
