Are we winning the war on cancer? Taking Sides Analytical Report
Following the review of the summary of the issue, where both articles presented both sides of the Cancer issue, it grew very succinct, and it went further to review the different views presented using opinions and facts, over the matter. The issue introduced Cancer as an array of diseases, which are marked by the uncontrolled growth and division of cells; invasion that destroys and intrudes the neighboring body tissues, spreading to other areas of the body, via lymph or blood. John Seffrin, the author of the first article, insists that the war against cancer is being won; he holds that victory against the disease is within reach (Seffrin 632). He goes ahead to back his views using facts, like the financing of the National Cancer Institution and NIH. He also presents the argument that prevention can be elevated into the scope of public policy, giving the example of cervical cancer, and adds the benefits that could come with the move.
Additionally, he explores the issue of availing modern-day cancer control/ management to the members of community, anticipating the benefits to be borne. From reviewing his side of the argument, he does not use many fallacies, except his optimism that the fight against cancer will be won – which I view as an opinion on the issue, and more of a fallacy. Some of the commendable facts that he uses to support his side is that on how the Surgeon General gave an account of second hand smoke, which would confirm the economic and the public health advantages of laws on clean indoor air. A second fact is the effect that a 20% reduction in cancer deaths would cause, as much as in the value of ten-trillion dollars for Americans. The emphasis on having a healthy population is crucial to the maintenance of the global economic standing. The opinions presented in support of his view include that, stopping to fund cancer research will mark a reduction in the dedication accorded to Americans. Secondly, he talks of the fact that failing to check the consumption of tobacco will lead to the loss of more than one billion Americans (Seffrin 632).
