Cases for Study
The main ethical issue being discussed in this case is environmental protection. The case talks about cruising activities in the ocean and how it affects the environment. A lot of environmental degradation results from ocean cruising resulting in environmental disasters like diseases and death of some species of sea animals. Dumping is the key issue, and from the case, it seems that there is no proper legislation to prevent dumping of toxic wastes in the oceanic waters. Illegal dumping in the ocean is on the increase resulting in the swelling of environmental hazards. However, some people are trying to justify the illegal dumping.
From this case, it can be noted that the cost of dumping is exceptionally high. This is the reason why cruising companies prefer to do illegal dumping and pay fines rather than following the legal channels of disposing off the wastes from their ships. Other people are of the opinion that the fines that are being imposed on illegal dumping are too small. This encourages this environmental vice to continue. Cruising lines seem to have taken a negative line towards social responsibility. They prefer to suffer from the consequences of illegal dumping rather than utilizing technology to make the waste product safe for dumping. This is resulting in grave effects to the environment. The ethical issue in this case concerns the problem of waste disposal, the rules governing it and the options that cruising lines have in addressing the problem of dumping wastes from the ships. Social responsibility concerns the actions that are taken by the ships in addressing the ethical problems – dumping of wastes. Social responsibility is derived from the behavior and actions of the ships as it relates to dumping.
For a long time, opinions have been resulting tin the creation of a gap between the highly paid and the low-paid and the high-paid laborers. Many opinions point out that the high paid or white collar workers are more likely to derive satisfaction and happiness from their work. This is perceived to be the opposite when it is applied to the low – paid workers. However, many studies have disapproved this notion. There is no significant difference between the low-paid and the high-paid workers more so as it concerns work motivation. All jobs are good so long as the person doing the job is motivated. Motivation is dictated by both the individual and the work environment.
I once worked as a packaging worker in a sugar company. I liked the job because our supervisor was respectful. He never confronted any worker in our shift. This encouraged us to work well and avoid mistakes which could annoy him. He also has a good sense of humor therefore2 it was fun working with him.
Most jobs become tedious because they lack motivation and the repetitive nature of tasks. Therefore, a job like a stock exchange analyst can be made more appealing by interchanging tasks. An example is opting to have a colleague to sit in for you as you go out to collect data for him or her.
All jobs can be improved. The problems that affect the improvement of jobs, mostly come from the managers who refuse to embrace changes that are suggested by employees. The perfect work for me is community developer. This is a field based job which is highly interactive in nature. It will help me meet new friends, gain new insights, skills and knowledge and eliminate boredom.
According to this case study, both technological and sociocultural factors have affected the market growth of consumer electronics. Sociocultural factors influencing the market of consumer electronics include the growth of the social media, the ever changing perception over the use of consumer electronics and the availability of these products. The technological factors include the speedy growth, development of sophistication of these products and the speedy and the rise in innovation by companies which manufacture these products.
The flat-screen television sets use improved HD technology and are being more purchased by the sophisticated population. They are also quite expensive hence can only be afforded by the working population. Home personal computers have become essential for most people. They are common with college students and people who are doing research work.
The crossover of Dell Company into the consumer electronics industry has been possible due to several of factors. The key factor is the success it has achieved in the Personal Computer industry. The other factor is the consumer friendly model adopted by the company and its partnership with other software companies like yahoo. The major challenge that the company is likely to face is that consumers take too long to change their habits and difficulty in demonstrating the quality of audio and video products.
The dealing in consumer electronics is part of business diversification and once it gains grounds it will help in expanding the revenue of Dell. Dell will have to spend a lot of money in partnerships, marketing and advertisement of its consumer electronics. Dell has not been well known to produce other consumer electronic products; therefore older companies will have a competitive advantage over it in the short -run. However, in the long-run as consumers test these products and associate them with Dell PCs, it will give the established companies a run for their money.
There were aspects of collaboration which might have prevented the SEC from quickly discovering the anomalies resulting from late trading in the securities market. SEC also lacked stiffer policies of regulating the securities industry which made it hard to detect the anomalies. I think the penalty that was imposed on strong and Strong Mutual Funds was appropriate. It put into consideration the welfare of genuine investors in the company. However, SEC would have ensured that strong paid the entire amount that was made due to illegal trading activities. His total baring from the financial industry was a sufficient punishment and a warning to people who would ever think of engaging in flawed deals.
I would ensure that all the employees of the company are taught about the policies governing the financial. I would also ensure that they are well trained on detecting anomalies and the dangers of engaging in illegal trade deals. I will make sure that they know the roles of SEC and the state’s role in regulating the industry.
The best thing is to determine whether the management is aware of the actions of such employees if not inform them. If they do not respond then, I would opt to report the matter to SEC. The first event like a fire disaster will make the company adjust its activities hence avoiding loses in the trade of its shares or securities. The second case for instance an announcement in the reduction of fuel prices will make the company adjust trade and make vast profits at the expense of other investors.
