There are three types of communication styles namely; passive assertive and aggressive. In passive Communication, you put the rights of others and lower yourself, assertive style is where u stand up for your right but still maintain the respect for the rights of others and in aggressive, one stands up for his rights and violates those of others. The best of them all is the assertive style and when applied, the project manager succeeds easily (Berkun & Berkun, 2008).
Communication styles play a number of roles in project management. One, a good manager gets to know the character of the employees and easily allocates them where he or she sees they fit. He also gets to know the best way to communicate or approach them thus leading to good and fruitful relations between them hence growth or progress of the project (Turner, 2007).
These styles too, help the manager to know who to involve in planning, who to depend on, who to involve in problem solving and even who to exclude in all this.
Understanding my personal communication style can help me be more effective as a project manager in various ways; knowing that I am assertive, passive or aggressive will help me make some adjustments and put myself in a position of an effective project manager by accepting the assertive character in me and (Berkun & Berkun, 2008). My primary communication style tends to be both passive and assertive because I am both a collaborator and a contributor.( Lee, 2009). There are times I lower myself especially to people ahead of me but at times I tend to also contribute my ideas to correct or be corrected. Secondary communication style is the information you already have in the project company or that you can get from the secondary source. In this case, mine is assertive since everyone our company success oriented and we know that it’s the best style to stick to if you want to progress (Turner, 2007).
The communication style that presents the most challenge for me is the aggressive style because people with this style tend to degrade others because they think that their opinions are the best even when they are wrong. They don’t give room for discussion because of their bossy characters (Berkun & Berkun, 2008).
Surprisingly, the DISK Assessment has interrogated me to know my view about communication styles for instance when it asked of the communication style that presented the most challenge to me. In addition to that to that, I got to know my communication style better (Saphiere, Mikk & DeVries, 2005).
