Community Health Advocacy Project Parts 5

How Hypertension among the Elderly Population may be Prevented
Hypertension among the elderly population in the United States has been an issue of concern. This is because; the impact of the disease is felt not only by the patients, but also by the family members and the government. The problem affects the patients in the sense that, the patients normally undergo immense pain and suffering. On the other hand, the family spends a substantial amount of money and time to take care of the patient. In connection to the above facts, the government spends a lot of money to supply medication in hospitals in order to take care of the elderly patients diagnosed with hypertension (Bensley & Brookins-Fisher, 2003). This study focuses on determining the how hypertension among the elderly population, and the society may be eradicated.
Goals of the study
The primary goal of this study was to investigate how hypertension among the elderly population may be prevented. In connection to the above goal, the study sought to investigate the importance of early treatment of hypertension as well as how hypertension may be managed. From the previous studies, It was found that hypertension among the elderly population was at an increase rate especially among the male at the age of 64 to 75 years. In connection to herein, it was found that, elderly women within an age brackets of 64 to 75 years were found to be significantly affected   by the disease. This is because of risk factors associated with obesity and unhealthy eating habits (Lundy & Janes, 2009). However, the proportion of men was found to be 25% higher than that of women. This indicate that, a significant number of elderly men are highly affected by hypertension. Immediate intervention measures need to be put in place in order to save the elderly people from hypertension. The intervention measures that can be taken are explained below under the target of the study.
The target of the study
The study targets at ensuring that, hypertension among the elderly population and the society at large is substantially reduced. The study further targets at educating the population about the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of the disease (Tulchinsky & Varavikova, 2009). This intervention measure will be achieved through community health advocacy projects. At this level, health experts and the government, through the ministry of health, will collaborate and provide the necessary health services and resource to conduct health campaigns all over the states. The health campaigns will help to sensitize and educate the population on the negative effects of hypertension, as well as the importance of early detection and treatment of the disease (Bensley & Brookins-Fisher, 2003). In connection to the above, the population will be educated on the importance of adopting healthy eating habits. Additionally, the health campaigns on hypertension will be projected into learning institutions whereby, a learning program will be introduced in learning institutions such as schools, colleges and universities. The aim for projecting the campaigns into the learning institution is because, students will have an opportunity of interacting with the elderly population diagnosed with hypertension in their homes. Hence, they will facilitate the campaign by educating their families on the importance early treatment and detection of hypertension among the elderly population.
Anticipated results
It expected that, hypertension among the elderly population will substantially fall if the population is to collaborate with health practitioners and the government to achieve this target. Additionally, it is anticipated that, after the campaigns, the elderly population will perceive the importance of early detection and treatment of hypertension. It is further expect that, early treatment of hypertension will help to prevent health risk associated with hypertension such as kidney failure, heart failure, breakage of the nervous system and even heart failure. Hypertension can be managed through changing life style and adopting healthy eating habits as well as taking medication as recommended by the health provider (Ivanov & Blue, 2007).
Time frame to achieve the above goals
The activities will be undertaken within a period of ten years, which is a consistent time of achieving such targets (Daly, 2005). Prior to the implementation of the above targets, participants who will help to implement the target will be selected from the herein stated institutions. The targets will be implemented in into two phases. In the first phase, implementation will be carried out within a time frame of five years. On the second phase, implementation will be conducted within the time frame of the remaining five years. Whereby short term targets such as; encouraging people to adopt health eating habits will be implemented in the first phase. On the other hand, long-term targets such as; introduction of health leaning programmes on hypertension programs in learning institution will be implemented in the second phase. Monitoring and assessment of the implementation of the set targets will be conducted within the intervals of each of the two phases. This help to determine whether the set targets are going to be realised within the timeframe. In order to facilitate the attainment of the herein targets, information sharing as well as capacity building among the participants will be highly encouraged (Ivanov & Blue 2007).
