. Compare this new perspective on the commodity you purchased to the one you developed in your first narrative

Assignment Requirements

Read Marx on Commodity Fetishism (pp319-329). We just covered the topic in the September 18 lecture. You can now re-analyze your purchase through the lens that Marx provides in this text, focusing on the process through which this particular commodity came into being, and especially on the people who actually produced it and their material and work situation. If you don’t know anything about this, do a bit of research to try to find out. If it is impossible to get concrete information about the specific object you purchased, find information about a similar object and use it to inform your account. Compare this new perspective on the commodity you purchased to the one you developed in your first narrative (you can cite from that first text, but please do not reproduce it entirely). Does the combination of these two exercises give you more insight into what Marx was trying to explain in this text and elsewhere, and why? Draw your own conclusions. Up to 1,200 words max

Memo 1 assignment
Dear students, Here is the final prompt for Memo 1.
As a reminder, the prompt for the short earlier assignment was as follows:
Think about an object of everyday life that is typically manufactured industrially. It can be a a piece of clothing (pair of jeans), an accessory (a backpack), a piece of electronic equipment, a bottle opener, a bike, a blanket, whatever. It can be dear to you or very mundane. You may have purchased it very recently or not. It can be expensive or very cheap.
Think back upon the moment you purchased it (the act of buying is essential here, so please don’t think of objects that were given to you, or that you inherited). Try to remember why you acquired it, what it meant (and if it did not mean anything in particular, that is OK too), if you talked about it with others, exchanged it etc… Describe when and how the purchase happened, write about any other significant moment connected to it, and submit a 400-500 words (about two pages) account to your GSI.
The assignment does not require any additional reading. Please DO NOT try to theorize or use any type of material we covered in the course. The whole point is that we want you to just describe the process as faithfully as you can (you can talk about how you paid for it, where you bought it, etc…), and reflect on your state of mind, emotions, social connections etc…
This is a purely descriptive assignment. THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWER HERE. It should take less than 20 minutes to complete. Just let yourself be carried by the flow of your recollection and your writing!
In the last short assignment, I have talked about my smartphone- Sony Z2 from Hong Kong last summer. Please do some research on the process through which this particular commodity came into being, and especially on the people who actually produced it and their material and work situation. Also please use the quotes from Commodity Fetishism (pp319-329) in the essay, at least 4-5 quotes. And 1200 words max.
