As a rough estimate, 2/3 of the page should summarize the lecture or event, a third of the page should include a summary of some further checking on your part that reviews the content of the event to see how valid or accurate it probably is (I will accept using Wikipedia and such for this review), and a final half page should report on your own analysis and response to the event.
REL. 103- 10 & 13, Barnes, Fall, 2014
INTRODUCTION TO THEOLOGICAL AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES.
Discovery PapersOf the 7 writing assignments for Rel 103, two of them are “discovery” papers. Each of these can be one of three different kinds (pick any two or suggest another).
Due dates. One of these reports must be handed in by Wednesday, October 22. The other must be handed in by Monday, November 24, the Monday before Thanksgiving break. Remember that you always have the option of handing one or both of these in early, before the deadlines
Length: like the other 5 reading guide assignments, each should be about one single-spaced page.
1. University event attendance and review.
Of the many special events at UD each semester, such as lectures in the Sears Recital Hall or in the KU Ballroom, many are related to religion in some way. The assignment related to such events is to produce at 1-page (single-space) report and review.
2. Further research into religions. (Be sure to cite your sources!)
You can do this in one of two major ways. The first is simply to do more research on a topic that is part of the course. (Check the detailed table of contents or your power point slides for some specific possibilities.) For example, there are many more specific beliefs in forms of life after death than we cover in the course. Check out anthropological sources to discover the beliefs of four or five other cultures than the ones we cover, summarize them, noting any similarities and differences, and relating them to categories used in the course. The second major way of doing research into religions is to visit a religious location that is new to you, such as a synagogue, mosque, or Hindu temple. Through the visit you need to find a way to also become more informed about the religious beliefs and practices of the relevant tradition. Students from China, Arabic countries, or elsewhere might want to explore movements in their own cultures.
3. Discover your fellow students.
Draw up a set of questions related to the religious beliefs or practices of other students at UD. First use these questions on a couple people you know well, to have them comment on whether the questions seem valid, interesting, clear, and so forth. Then with your improved questions find at least five students to interview, recording their responses. You do NOT need to give me the students’ names, though it may be interesting to note their majors and their own religious background, if any. Possible topics for questions: a) What is the religious atmosphere at UD – quite religious, moderate, not very? In this regard where do you see the most religiousness and where the least? What percentage of students at UD follow traditional religious morals? Etc. b) A set of questions for Muslim students: Is the UD campus comfortable for you religiously? What seems to be the attitude of UD students towards Muslim students? [for foreign students:] Is the US in general lacking in religiousness compared to your home country? Etc. c) Etc. Similar questions might be devised for students from China. Be inventive. Figure out some interesting angle for your questions. If there are things you would have liked to ask UD students but were reluctant to do so, you can use this assignment as an excuse – “my teacher assigned discovery papers.”
