Discussion #4
by Jonathan Lee – Wednesday, 24 September 2014, 1:14 PM

Many scholars, journalists, and writers have said that “Cambodia lost its soul” during the Khmer Rouge period. They also suggest that many of the social, economic, and political problems that challenge the Cambodian communities, in the diaspora and in the United States are directly a result of unsolved trauma and the lack of justice and closure. In the weeks after this, we explore not only the challenges but also possibilities for positive social change. Discuss the type of reconciliation that can lead to healing and positive social change.

I believe that the key to healing any society that has experienced a crisis in the loss of it’s culture is awareness and education. It is important for the people of a damaged culture to know their history, to know what led them to their current state, and to know what exactly made their society great. A sense of pride in one’s culture and a sense of unification with the people of your culture can lay the foundation needed to re-build what has been lost.

At first, it took me few days to keep rereading the question of Discussion #4 and think about its answer. Also, I wait to read classmate’s replies so that I could come up with something. And your answer inspired me to think about ideas of reconciliation to healing and positive social change. That is awareness and education of the lost culture, which is basic foundation.

I feel like many cultures throughout the world are experiencing a sort of identity crisis. The technological age and globalization are two major factors in creating a phenomenon where people no longer feel connected to their culture, their country and their fellow patriots. One positive of the recent shift towards globalization is a somewhat more connected world, but I think it is important to maintain a unique identity that binds together members of particular culture. When people feel unified and like they are part of something great they are more likely to look out for the needs of society as a whole rather than just what they need on an individual level.
