CIS014-6 Cryptography and Cryptanalysis
The purpose of this exercise is to provide you with a real world experience for the technical problems that an organisation may have to face, when equipping itself with IT security and reorganising its practices for effectively using them.
The exercise requires you, acting as a consultant, to produce a cryptanalysis report for the client. You may resource any information, such as web-sites, books, journals and so on (both updated one and classic ones).
Cryptanalysis is the study of analysing information systems in order to study the hidden aspects of the systems. Cryptanalysis could be used to breaching encrypted IT security systems and gain access to the contents of encrypted messages, when the cryptographic key is unknown.
You are required to carry out a cryptanalysis to retrieve the original message here. A broad Literature review on modern as well as classic cryptographic algorithms is required.
MacKay IT Services is a small independent financial advice company located in Bedford. Up to now, it has occupied a small office building near the canal.
The company consists of:
A managing partner, Ian McKay, who does the lions share for client business, as well as overall management of the company. He carries a laptop all the time.
A full-time associate, Smith MacKay?who is licensed to do the technical advice activities.
One of the secretarial staff: Alice. Alice works full-time and is very experienced. Her jobs are typing, managing the diaries, getting quotes and running the offices.
One day, Charlie took his laptop out for business trip. But he forgot to bring his logbook, on which he recorded all the security protocols used for his clients. Then he received an email from his client, forwarded by Alice to decrypt the following message:
Identify the cipher key and explain the algorithm used.
You need to use cryptanalysis to help Smith to break the cipher text and retriever the original message (plain-text). Demonstrate your intermediate results in tables. Provide reflection of your learning; and a peer assessment.
Where relevant, consider socio-economic and policy influences when answering the question.
Where relevant, reflect international and comparative perspectives.
Consider the use of cases of examples to supplement your answer.
