Cognition Lab 2014
One of the interesting things about human cognition is that some things grab our attention and get brought to our conscious awareness and others do not. Actually why this is so is not entirely clear, but it is well known that at least some types of stimuli grab our attention more than others. For example, looking at a knife or a piece of chocolate might cause you to react differently compared to looking at a table.
You need to find evidence for the idea that different things might cause us to give different responses to them.
In this lab, we will examine this. To do so, two main manipulations were run in our experiment. The first examined the extent to which we recognize stimuli that are on the borderline of our perceptual awareness – that is, we presented stimuli that were masked so they were difficult to see. We did this using stimuli that were presented at 3 different durations within the masks (50ms, 67ms, 83ms).
You need to understand how perceptual identification works and what might be learned from it.
The second manipulation examined the type of stimuli. In particular, we used negative (knife), neutral (door), and positive words (love).
You need to find evidence that words with different types of emotional valence might be processed differently.
Finally, apart from stimuli and task type, it might be the case that some people are simply more affected by certain characteristics of stimuli than others. To try to find further support for this, we used two scales, the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Index (SSTAI; Spielberger, Gorsuch, Lushene, Vagg, & Jacobs, 1983) and the Oxford Happiness Questionaire (OHQ; Hillis & Argyle, 2002) and correlated them with results from the task (i.e., the size of the effect displayed by each individual). You need to find evidence for this, i.e., that individual differences might predict performance on a cognitive task like ours. (Note: you don’t have to find anything to do with the reliability/validity of these two scales, you can accept them as reasonable things to use in this situation).
You don’t have to do the method or the results for this lab – these are presented below — but the rest of the lab is up to you. Please refer to Bruce’s book on how to write lab reports and an example of what a really good report looks like.
