Aims and Objectives
The purpose of this lab is to study the series and parallel RLC circuits when connected to AC voltage or current sources. Examine the polar and rectangular forms of voltage, current, impedance, admittance and the effective power of the circuits using simple mathematical techniques. Construct the circuits using Multisim on your PC and then perform simulation (where possible) to visualize the waveforms and current/voltage versus frequency responses. By the end of this lab, you should be able to analyse the RLC circuits. You are required to record all the activities (i.e., calculated results and comments) in your logbook as you carry out the task.
Equipment required:
Desktop PC, NI Multisim software, scientific calculator and Logbook
Procedure:
1. In the following figure:
a) Find the total impedance ZT in polar form.
b) Draw the impedance diagram.
c) Calculate the value of C in microfarads and L in henries.
d) Find the current I and voltage VR, VL and VC in phasor form.
e) Draw the phasor diagram of the voltage E, VR, VL and VC and current I.
f) Verify the Kirchhoff’s voltage law around the closed loop.
g) Find the average power delivered to the circuit.
h) Find the power factor of the circuit, and indicate whether it is leading or lagging.
i) Write the sinusoidal expressions for the voltages and current.
j) Use Multisim to construct the above circuit and then observe the waveforms of the voltages and current on the oscilloscope.
2. For the network shown in the figure and the applied source:
a) Find the total admittance YT in polar form.
c) Calculate the value of C in microfarads and L in henries.
d) Find the voltage E and currents IR, IL and IC in phasor form.
e) Draw the phasor diagram of the currents IS, IR, IL and IC and voltage V.
f) Verify the Kirchhoff’s current law at one node.
g) Find the average power delivered to the circuit.
h) Find the power factor of the circuit, and indicate whether it is leading or lagging.
i) Write the sinusoidal expressions for the currents and voltage.
j) Observe the waveforms of the currents and voltage on the same axes.
