The people surrounding the individual and the social culture of the household and community around him, all influence what the person becomes. In Amy Tan’s short story, Rules of the Game,

Waverley Place Jong’s mother is a traditional Chinese woman who believes that the Chinese way of raising children is the best way. Her
intentions are good. She does not spoil her children. The family is not rich but they eat three five-course meals a day. She is proud
of her heritage so that even when Waverley (Meimei to the family) asks her if it is true that the Chinese do tortures, the mother
replies that “We do torture. Best torture (Tan).” She also knows that being in An American, she has to follow the American rules, even if they seem stupid to her. Her mother pushes Meimei to excel. She also believes in feigning humility. This style suggestion: maybe be sparing with “this,” often a weak and vague transitional expression is the kind of rearing that the protagonist grew up with so that all her life Meimei is driven to be proud, excel, not question American rules, and to feign humility.
This style of upbringing, however, would stifle Meimei and bring about her conflict with her mother. When Meimei was only beginning

Not sure what is meant tournaments. When she starts winning and becomes a celebrity in the neighborhood, her mother feels as if Meimei’s achievements are hers as well and that without her, Meimei would have not accomplished what she had. In spite her ignorance and lack of knowledge behind the logic of the game, she would tell her daughter to lose less chess pieces, to Meimei’s consternation. It also annoyed Meimei
that her mother announces her to the shops awkward in the market. Meimei does not understand that in Chinese culture, the family member and the family are one. The child is the extension of his or her mother’s not sure what is meant pride. Therefore, when Meimei expresses about
how embarrassed she is about what her mother does, her mother interprets it as her daughter’s embarrassment of her.
Accurately, no? She is embarrassed by her mother…
As above re This is why when she returns after running away from her mother, Mrs. Jong declares, “We not concerning this girl. This girl is not
concerning for us (Tan).”

Chinese-influenced surroundings, Meimei feels like most American children, the need to grow-up
and become independent of her family.
Meimei uses her mother’s own advice to break free from her mother’s control.
The best lesson she learns from her mother is what she calls the art of invisible strength. According to the old Chinese saying, the
wise man “not go against the wind…Strongest wind cannot be seen (Tan).”

Meimei chose to be quiet in the face of her mother’s anger. She simply goes to her room, locks the door behind her, goes to bed, and
ponders on her next move as if her life is a chess game. This ending to the story suggests that Meimei has actually imbibed her
mother’s teaching of taking advantage of the opponent’s aggressiveness by fighting stealthily and in silence. She has learned well
from her mother and is now applying the lessons. The irony, however, is that Meimei is using the lesson in order to assert her own
individuality and independence.
The physical and social environments of the individual mold the character of a person and give him a sense of belonging to the social
group which influences him. Sometimes, however, the same upbringing isolates the individual or makes him wish to part from the very
social group which raised him.

In the story of Waverley Place Jong, the protagonist grows up in a Chinese neighborhood in America, closely raised by her own mother.
Her mother’s style, however, stifles her so that in the end, she chooses to defy her mother and assert her own independence.
