A good outline for your paper is this:
1) Introduction
A) Provide basic information on the song, including release date, short artist biography, that sort of thing.
2) Discuss your dislike
A) Tell us what you dislike about the song. Are there any personal reasons for your dislike? Give us the background and try to convince us this is not a good song.
3) The “why?”
A) Now examine your dislike. What’s really under the surface, motivating your reasons to hate this piece of music? Are these formal reasons (ie: something about the song’s music or rhythm or structure), content reasons (ie: a problem with what the song is about), or personal reasons (ie: a negative association with the song in your own life?) Why do you hate this song?
4) The “why not?”
A) At this point you should try to determine why other people like the song. Try to be objective in your analysis and determine what is “good” about this kind of music in the minds of others. Are there objective standards of taste? Is it possible for something you vehemently dislike to be so pleasing to someone else?
5) Conclusion
A) Wrap things up, tell us if your mind changed at all in the process of if you’ll have any kind of a different outlook moving forward.
In the essay you should feel free to draw on any section of the book, since the whole thing has been assigned by now, but you’re not obligated to any specific part. Use it as you see fit.
