Logos is a Greek word deriving its origin from the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. In modern English the word is translated to mean logic. In its description it simply means the effort of a person presenting an argument to persuade through the intellect of the audience. Logos is invoked by speakers to present information and facts to support the speaker’s arguments. Logos is classified into two different types. First, the speaker may choose to use examples drawn from general points (John, para.1).
Ethos, pathos, and logos
Ethos has a Greek and has a close link to the English word trustworthy. Ethos is said to be the most effective modes of presenting arguments since the listener wholeheartedly pay undivided attention to the speaker due to the trust created by the speaker (John, para.7). The last form of persuasive argument is pathos which literary means pathetic. The audience at this form of argument is struck by the emotional appeal. The emotional appeal is not restricted to positive emotions but also negative emotions such as hatred (John, para.3).
In the essay, Judith Murray presents her argument on the equality of sexes and the prevailing perception towards male and female sex.The author tries to appeal to her reader through well framed rhetoric questions on the superiority and the inferiority of male and female sex respectively (Murray, p.132). An intellectual appealing argument will at the end of the presentation lead to the audience being taken to be trustworthy. She portrays her logic way of argument by the very introduction of her essay when she appreciates the facts that human being differ in the strength of their minds. She clearly brings out her logical arguments by showing the male dominance of the society. Through the intellectual appeal she shows how men have tried to proclaim superiority over women (Murray, p.133).
She further argues that proof has been found of how men have painted inferiority on women including claiming that they are the Godly gender. Through, her strong intellect she finishes her poem by stating that nature offers emotions equally to both men and women (Murray, p.134). However, her use of terms such as “suffer me to ask” makes a sharp shift from logos to pathos since the effect of such statement is that it arouses emotions (Murray, p.133). The author shows how men have contributed to women being who they are. She clearly shows how a boy child is introduced to science while the girl child is domesticated. As witnessed in the discussion above the writer has employed the three types of argument presentation. She has smartly interlinked the persuasive ways (Murray, p.133).
Fallacies in the essay
Fallacies can be defined as detectable defects associated with logic arguments, otherwise known as logical fallacies. The author has employed a lot of fallacies in the essay. She has personalized the female character in the essay. First, she speaks through the voice of the female character in the essay. Secondly, much of the work has been to discredit the male character in the essay by defeating all the arguments propelled by men to prove that they are superior to women. The author has maintained a fallacy by employing rhetoric in the essays which have the effect of triggering the emotions of the listener (Murray, p.135).
The three forms of persuasive argument namely; logos, pathos and ethos are used to make a speech more persuasion. The choice of the one form of persuasion skill is determined by the nature of the audience and the essence of the communication. However, the three forms mostly overlap.
