Garbology;analyzing the hyrdrodynamics of different swimming strokes
Formatting
The report must be typed on standard paper size (i.e. 8.5” x 11”) using 10 point font size and spaced 1.5 lines. The report must not exceed two pages.
The Assignment
You will be analyzing the hydrodynamics of different swimming strokes. Using a pool, take turns having you and a partner swim as outlined below in A, B, C, and D. You can start each swim with a push-off from the pool wall or by starting away from the wall and not using a push-off. Do not use a dive start.
A) Swim a specific distance (your choice, but at least 10 meters) using the freestyle (front crawl) stroke with the face and head out of the water for the duration of the swim
B) Swim the same distance as covered in A) above, again using the freestyle (front crawl) stroke but now with the face and head in the water for the duration of the swim. To breath roll the head to one side, but try not to lift the head and face out of the water.
C) Swim as far as possible staying underwater using only the dolphin kick for propulsion (arms held out in front of the body in the direction of the swim but not used for propulsion; keep the face down and head between outstretched arms).
D) Swim that same distance as covered in C) above but now stay on the surface (not submerged) using only the dolphin kick as in C) above with the same body position (face down, head between outstretched arms) and covering the same distance as in C).
In your report, answer the following questions,
1. For A) and B) above, record the time to the nearest tenth of a second (i.e. 0.01) that it takes the swimmer to cover the distance you have chosen. Also count the number of strokes required to complete the distance.
2. Calculate the average stroke frequency (strokes per time) and average stroke length (strokes per distance) of the swimmer in each of A) and B).
3. Discuss the reasons for any differences in the results found for A) and B). The factors to discuss are swim time, stroke frequency, stroke length, and perceived effort.
4. For C) and D) above, record the time to the nearest tenth of a second that it takes the swimmer to cover the distance you have chosen.
5. Discuss the reasons for the differences in results found in C) and D). The factors to discuss are swim time and perceived effort.
