A person who has not had a chance of meeting their grandparents for one reason or another may not really get what it means to have your grandparent around. Others who have had the opportunity of interacting with their grandparents may not appreciating their importance since they think it is obvious to have met a grandparent. But no, it is not obvious but instead it is a great privilege. Most people are born when their grandparents are already dead or people are born far away from their grandparents especially if the parents migrated or they were separated by war or other forms of disaster. I state in this essay that grandparents are an important gift to ones life since they connect one to the past and they have a lot of advice.
I count myself as among the luck and blessed people since I gotten a chance to interact with both my grandparents (from my mother’s and my father’s side). My grandparents from my father’s side have already passed on. The only remaining grandparent from my mother’s side is already too old. Despite this, the memories of the stories they used to narrate to me are still fresh in my mind. I cannot forget the narrations made by my grandfather about Nahom of Nephi and the NHM tribe. These helped me understood Saudi Arabia and its people.
My grandparents (especially my grandmother) helped me a lot in growing up as a disciplined person. I only came to realize this when I was grown up. In my young age, I always took it as a punishment. In fact I used to despise my grandmother and I was a bit disobedient to her. Whenever she would ask me to do something for her and I did not like to do it, I would play around with her and refuse to do it. I always knew that her old age would not allow her to chase after me. But I think I was a bit foolish since she would just give up chasing after me and wait for the best opportunity to catch me and discipline me. One of her tactics of catching me was to offer me one of her best foods (mainly the akirah and hawayij) later in the day. Since she would do it in a friendly way, I used to go after the food and forgot I had done her wrong. She would then get hold of me after enjoying the delicious meal of kimaje and a lassi drink not to mention the tasteful dates. Then she would pinch me on the feet as a mild form of punishment to discipline me. Although I came to learn that beating a child is not the best form of discipline, I always remember my grandparent’s form of discipline with a lot of good memories. After all she would always have me enjoy the meal first. I also learnt that she was always clever than me despite her weak body.
My grandfather was a wise man who practiced a nomadic life of keeping goats and sheep. I cannot forget his pieces of advice on succeeding in life. I remember how he used to tell me about tips of saving money. He used to have a container where he would save his money although he never showed me where he had hidden it. I think this was due to privacy reasons. Although I never saw it, I was sure it existed as he used to insist on saving. He told me that he covered much of his children’s school fees through savings and there I learned a great lesson of saving. In my young age, I also had my own savings container. Unfortunately I used to know the amount that I had put in the container and I would get tempted to break it. I would not get enough Yemeni coins (earlier known as Ghirsh, Riyal or Halala) to save on a regular basis. It was therefore easy to remember how many time I had put the now Yemeni coins and how much. Although one may laugh at me because of my childish way of saving, I have become a very good person in saving. At least these days we have enough banks and I have savings in my bank account. I save from my pocket money and I forgo some things for the sake of saving. I will succeed just like my grandfather.
In deed, there are a lot of lessons I learnt from my grandparents and I cannot exhaust these in this essay. The lessons I learnt from my grandmother and grandfather are always in my mind.
