Hiking on the Himalaya Mountain is considered amongst the toughest hikes. This requires more efforts both physically and psychologically. Relative to the psychological aspect, personal attributes as well as group attributes are required. All the participants have to make their contribution from their personal perspective. In this respect, it is necessary to personal attributes to transcend the group’s attributes. Therefore, the needs of the group have to come first in this hike. However, personal ethics dictates the humanity aspects in everything that happens or we face. On meeting Sadhu, my individual instincts would have influenced the group to overlook the well being of Sadhu, where my mind would have been set free from thinking of the harm that might happen to him or not.
A feeling of guilt traumatizes someone especially if it concerns a right action that was not taken in due time. In Sadhu’s case, it was necessary to first attended him to enhance his well being. In return, our conscious would have been freed and satisfied. Stephen, one amongst us, was strongly disturbed by this act of abandoning a helpless man. In fact, everyone was touched by Sadhu’s situation but feared to destroy the group’s vision on the basis of individualism. As a result, everyone left the man in agony without any help.
It was my fault for not considering luring other individuals to take appropriate action about the situation. It was necessary to initiate a platform where each and everyone would have aired his/her views about the situation and what needed to be done. This would have made things easier as a conclusive decision satisfying everyone would have been uniformly reached. In the long run, this would strengthened the group on how to face challenges ahead which would otherwise affected one of them or the group as whole. In addition, this would have led to mutual satisfaction and understanding where each person’s feelings and contribution are highly considered.
This experience with Sadhu helped to sensitize me a lot. I have clearly gained an insight of the obstacles facing organizations particularly in the management sector. One and the most significant obstacles in businesses are steered by differences in personal and group ethics. It is quite clear that people in an organization say the administrators, employees and the stakeholders as well have varied personal attributes. This creates a dilemma which have to be solved appropriately more so in occurrence of unusual circumstances. The approach in which organizations use to solve individual and corporate issues is demanding.
For this reason, ethical dilemmas are usually common and unavoidable in business organization. This is attributed to the fact that people think differently and would therefore handle situations differently. First and foremost, the success and progress of any business is highly related to team effort. And for team effort to be realized disagreements between members are evident and compulsory. Therefore, ethical dilemmas help to achieve a strong team. The key components of a strong team/organization include leadership decision making and organization culture.
In regards to leadership, a leader who will be able to solve the dilemmas of an organization is a necessity. There are various forms of leadership styles and similarly they have different impact in the organization. The leadership style must be based on the following criteria; developing of workers and unleashing their creative potential, creating a positive working place which will attract and retain talented workers, and reinforcement of innovations and risks taking to suit the uncertain future. Of all the leadership styles, servant leadership is the most recommended. This type of leadership presents a radical approach that is humanistic and spiritual where attention is directed to all members of the organization. In addition, servant leadership is flexible meaning that it is based on team spirit rather than self ambition and pride. This means that he/she is able to neglect personal values and follow the corporate values of the organization. This will ensure an organization has a proper mechanism to handle issues of ethical dilemmas. In reference to our case, there was no a ring leader who could have provided the direction and initiated the solution to our problems like the Sadhu situation. If we had a servant leader, Sadhu would not have been left unattended. This is because a servant leader is humane thus cares for the welfare of people regardless if they his/her subjects.
Relative to decision making, it is a complex process. Shared governance is the key to good decision making. This is a system of involving employees and stakeholders of the organization in decision making. This consensus enhances success of an organization as what is passed satisfies each and every individual. As earlier mentioned, if we had reached a common agreement, Sadhu case would have been dealt with accordingly to the satisfaction of everybody. However, this a big challenge to organization without a good decision making institution since individuals opt for their own different ways of solving difficulties facing them and the organization at large. This is because there are no guidelines to be used in approaching the problem. This makes the situation to be complex and have huge consequences. Likewise for our case, individuals opted for their ways of solving the case since there were no specific guidelines to be followed. The group was joined by one goal of climbing the mountain and no one wanted to be a hindrance to this.
As far as organization culture is concerned, the cause of ethical dilemmas is cultural diversity. Different cultures have their own ways of handling issues. These would result to conflicts and complexities in implementing or solving issues. This is because every person would like things done in his/her and there is no way one person’s approach will be used and those of others ignored. Such a situation would further intensify the existing problem. Additionally, some of the people may ignore a problem if its of no effect to them. Therefore, there is a need to develop an organization culture that will suit all the members. This will reduce the dilemmas by a reasonable percentage. On top of this, all the members of the organizations have equal rights which will be directed towards in a similar direction to solve the problem. According to this our case, we were people from different cultural setups. And since there was no uniform cultural standard to guide us thus it became difficult to solve the problems/situations we encountered. Some of our members ignored or lacked interest with Sadhu because he was not from our culture.
Sadhu case has strong impact in organization management particularly at international level. Cultural diversification is more pronounced internationally and thus there is high likelihood of conflicts happening. Embracing good leadership style, decision making skills and organization culture is the key to success of both a local and global organization.
