History of Africa Diaspora
The African Diaspora is a group of people who live in Europe, America, Asia, and Australia, but their homeland is Africa. African Diaspora came into existence during the slave trade that took place during the proto-globalization period (1600-1800). Slaves from Africa, and Asia were transported to Europe and America. The trade took place mainly along oceans and seas because water was the major form of transport at that time. The Atlantic Ocean that passes through various continents was the main slave trade route. The slaves who went to Europe, and America undertook various tasks that the whites could not manage. These tasks include farming, milling, constructing of road networks, household chores, and assembling of metals to manufacture automobiles (Lewin 87).
The whites oppressed Africans by forcing them to undertake tiring chores. The Americans and Europeans underpaid the slaves and gave them less food. The oppression and the ability of Africans to perform tedious tasks led to the rise of movements that opposed slavery. Africans formed lobby groups to fight for equal rights with whites because this would end the slave trade. President Lincoln led the first African Liberty Movement in 1863. Martin Luther also led a civil movement at the Lincoln memorial in 1963 where he gave a speech. The speech is known as, “I have a dream,” led to the assassination of the activist in 1967 (Sherwood 69). The movement also led to equality between Africans and other races in America and later Europe. Despite the equality that is manifested in the laws, researchers argue that the black people in the Diaspora still undergo affliction.
Significance of Egypt to the African Diaspora
All Africans honor Egypt because this is the region where the slave trade was the highest in the world. Africans in other continents made it to these regions through the slave trade. The Arabs settled in Egypt before moving to other regions because they would access the country easily through the sea. Slaves from all over the continent were also transported to Egypt before being moved to Europe and America through the Red Sea. The settlement of Arabs, Britons, Portuguese, and other colonialists in Egypt led to the civilization of the country. The blacks who live in other regions visit museums to view ancient African artifacts. Arthur Lewis argues that the Egyptian exhibits in the Diaspora are unique from others in the museums (Lewin 103). This is an indication that Egypt is highly honored for being the origin of civilization and Africans abroad.
