Observation Practical Report Guidance
The Observation Task Pretend play forms an important part of childhood and has a number of functions, one of which might be that it aid learning and thus cognitive, social and emotional development. Your practical task is to use your observations from the video of young children playing and interacting with the teacher to assess what role pretend play might play in learning Therefore your research question will be: How does the teacher use pretend play to convey learning?
The Report Include a title and abstract. Introduction
In the introduction you should include information about different ways that pretend play has been studied and evidence of its importance for any aspect of learning and development. Include some consideration of why some approaches might be more appropriate for use with young children than others. There are references on the list provided which will help you with this. Your introduction should lead up to the research question.
This should be detailed enough to allow replication of the study. You can draw on references from the list on observation methods to justify your approach. Begin with details of who you were observing and under what circumstances. Explain and provide reasons for the observational research approach you have used in this study: Was it theory-testing/exploratory? Structured/unstructured? Participant/non-participant? Covert/overt? Lab-based/naturalistic? Provide a step-by-step account of what you did including for the observation, recording, development of codes and so on. Include explanations where necessary – for example to say how your approach contributed to the validity of your observations.
Provide a summary of your observations perhaps with second cycle categories as subheadings and selected examples of the data under each of the headings.
Use this section to consider and explain how your results fit with claims about how young children interact with their friends. Identify limitations of your study and the approach you have used and suggest how this may limit your ability to come to a definite answer to the research question. Detail how you could strengthen the evidence provided by the study if you were doing it again either by amending the qualitative approach you have used or by extending it to include a more structured, quantitative approach. Include References Appendices You may include full versions of longer documents you used to carry out the study, for example, pre-observation reflections, ‘transcript’ of the observation and coded data.
Word count limit is 1700 (please try not to exceed it, thanks)
