The assignment requires you to analyse the current situation, identify and specify the organisational issues, and suggest practical and probable solutions. https://www.cqu.edu.au/current-student/international-students/student-support/learning-skills-unit/resources
The course website also provides useful information in regard to the development of this assessment item.
Description
Assessment task 1 requires the writing of a business report. The report should be designed as a management document that can be used to implement recommended changes. It should include a comprehensive analysis of the current situation using change management theories, models and frameworks. The report should clearly explain the various options available and analyse the consequences of these. The assignment is based on a case study that describes the impact of cultural change, strategic repositioning and other challenges of business activities. The purpose of the report is to identify the roles of change in organisational culture and other challenges in managing dynamic organisations. Students are expected to engage in extensive research within the academic literature relating to organisational culture, models of planned change, scale of change and management style during organisational change.
Details
The assessment item is based on the case study titled David Jones (pg. 448-452 of textbook: Organisational Change Development and Transformation by Waddell et. al., 5th Edition, Cengage Learning). The case is available on the Moodle site under the Assignments tab. You should read, and carefully analyse, the case and respond to the issues presented at the end of the case study within the context of a business report. You are required to support your argument with appropriate theoretical discussion and references.
The assignment should be a properly constructed business report. It should contain headings and sub headings. The introduction should introduce the report, thesis statement (main objective of the assignment) and include your argument. The main body of the assignment should present the evidence you have collected to support your arguments for the case questions (with headings and sub headings) and the conclusion should restate your arguments, summarise the evidence and make a conclusion regarding your arguments.
The assignment should contain a coherent, but necessarily restricted review of the academic literature on organisational culture, models of planned change, scale of change and management style during the change management topics in question. The literature review should be integrated into the assignment, not a separate section. A reference list formatted in the prescribed Harvard style is compulsory. Do not include a bibliography. Further information regarding formatting of assignments and other information is available at https://www.cqu.edu.au/about-us/service-and-facilities/referencing
This assessment item involves researching your assigned topic to enhance your understanding of organisational culture, models of planned change, scale of change and change management styles, concepts, strategies and the utilisation of academic literature. Whilst you should avoid using only the textbook, the prescribed textbook for the course should be cited in regard to broad change management strategies. You will be expected to present information and evidence from, and cite, at least twelve (12) relevant peer-reviewed journals or other academic references (books, book chapters etc.) (minimum requirement). Refer to your recommended readings for examples of academic journals. While you can cite these references, you must find twelve (12) peer reviewed journal articles and/ or other academic references not listed in the course materials. The quality and number of citations will demonstrate the breadth and depth of the literature used to answer the questions. It is strongly recommended that you use recent (within the last five years of publication) and relevant references. You may only use references more than five years old if those references are seminal (major ideas generated, proposed theories etc.) in nature. Also, it is strongly recommended that you do not use long quotes in assignments as it undermines your argument. Please check the following databases for journals and other academic references for the assignment. You may access the databases through the CQU library page. Your marker is interested in the analysis that you have developed from your review of the literature and how well you use the literature to respond to the topic. Avoid presenting a descriptive account only of your readings. What is required in this assessment is a critical evaluation of the academic literature as it relates to the specific details of the case study. Your marker is interested in the conclusions that you arrive at from your evaluation of the literature and of the case study.

Case Study: David Jones (pg. 448-452 of textbook: Organisational Change Development and Transformation by Waddell et. al., 5th Edition, Cengage Learning), Case is available in Moodle site under Assignments tab.
Established in 1838, David Jones is an iconic and oldest department store in Australian history. Since its establishment, the retail environment in Australia went through dramatic changes in the last 174 years. This case study reviews the recent troubles of David Jones, including its criticised company culture under Mark McInnes, its desire to emulate Nordstorm’s online retail success and its new strategy and positioning of its retail activities to reaffirm its importance in the Australian consumer arena. Based on the above case study write a report that answers all of the following four questions:
1. Which model of planned change best suits the David Jones case study? Justify your answer by aligning the case and model of plans.
You should discuss your arguments using ideas, theories of planned change (page 32-50, chapter 2 of textbook) and Figure 2.1 and 2.2 explained in chapter 2 of the textbook and other academic references.
2. Do you agree with the changes being made in the current restructure of David Jones? Are there any other changes you would add? Why?
Relate your answer to the required changes at David Jones based on industry dynamics, change in culture and the retail industry. If you recommend having further changes at David Jones, it is recommended that you have your discussion and arguments developed and based on academic literature, industry context and the business activities of David Jones.
3. Which of the four ‘scale of change’ models best fits the changes made by David Jones? Critically analyse the case context with your suggested ‘scale of change’ model.
You should develop your primary arguments in terms of scale of change model (page 52-53 of the textbook, chapter 2) and other academic references.
4. Which style of management in the Dunphy and Stace model best fits David Jones’ CEO Paul Zahra? Please justify your arguments by integrating examples from the case study, Dunphy and Stace’s change management model and other academic references.
You should discuss your arguments using ideas, theories of organisational change strategies (page 52-53 of textbook) and other academic references.
All the answers must be written with supporting academic references
