International migration theories include both micro and macro approaches. Use experiences of Scottish Highlanders and/or of Black American Queen Bush settlers to comment on the merits and shortcomings of both types of approaches. Overall which approach(or set of approaches) do you find more convincing?
Theories on international migration include micro and macro: micro approaches emphasize that the migration of people is determined by the push and pull factors that the people experience, based on their interpretation of the different factors. These factors include politics, economic conditions, culture and the demography of the target country. Micro approaches, on the other hand, emphasize that migration is determined by the potential benefits and the foreseen costs to be borne after migrating. This paper will discuss the two theories, with reference to the black American populations of Queen Bush, to demonstrate that macro theories account for international migration better that micro theory.
Macro approaches emphasize the objective structural conditions of international migration. The theorists of this theory regard that there are push and pull factors, which form the basis of the objectives. Some of the scholars of the approaches state that the politics, economic condition, culture and the demography of the target country, as well as that of the country of origin work as the pull or the push factors for the immigration of people and groups. However, emphasis is channeled towards the nature of the push-pull model, because it is believed to depend on the personal interpretation of the different push-pull factors, making a macro outlook.
From the conception of the macro theories, there are four determining factors that control migration: factors at the destination country, factors at the origin country, which are viewed in an objective manner; existing obstacles, for example, language and distance and individual factors, including marital status and age. Further, it is not just the objective factors that determine migration behavior, but the perception of the migrant. For that reason, the objective conditions leading to migration cannot be regarded as universal; therefore, the model is viewed more like a theoretical approach than a suggestive classification form for influencing factors.
Micro theories focus around the factors that sway the personal decisions of people; the theories evaluate the ways, in which potential migrants examine the benefits and the foreseen costs of migrating, concerning their individual expectations and values. Micro theories are most times enriched by the rational choice theoretical model, which regards controversial assumptions regarding why and how individuals arrive at decisions. However, the micro approach to migration is relevant, mainly because it evaluates the internal considerations offered to the different factors causing the migration. For that reason, it appears that it supplements the viewpoint of the macro theories, by evaluating the ways in which the person arrives at a decision, concerning relational factors and objectives of migrating.
The Black American settler populations of Queen Bush
During the 19th century, the Queen’s Bush area was unsettled, until 1500 or more freed black slaves developed farms along the Wellesley and Peel township borders. Working cooperatively, the self-reliant and highly industrious black settlers developed schools, churches and other features of a vibrant community life (Brown-Kubisch 20-23). During the 1840s, government officials ordered for the surveying of the district, which made many of the black settlers unable to buy the lands they had cleared and developed.
