“Let them go or Force them to Stay?”

“Let them Go or Force them to Stay?”
When President Abraham Lincoln came into power, he was faced with the unexpected national emergency of thirteen southern states declaring themselves seceded from the Union and forming their own nation, the Confederate States of America. He had to either save the union or let it dissolve. Lincoln opted for the option of using the armed forces to force the South to stay in the union. The military potion was necessary to prevent seceding states from taking over federal military installations and confiscating weapons, ships, vital ports and forts. Lincoln’s choice of the military was a better option as he would not allow the expansion of slavery to even one more state, given his strong opposition to slavery. Lincoln had witnessed the eventual growth in number of seceding states. It was obvious that allowing the Southern states to secede would eventually influence even the Northern supporters of slavery and the union would be weakened politically and military-wise. The Southern states were already a military threat as evidenced by the Southern troops seizing of the southern federal ports on February 1861. If allowed to be more autonomous, the Southern troops would eventually overthrow the federal troops thereby enforcing their slavery practices to all the states. Lincoln did not choose to let the seceding states leave in the hope that the two nations would exist side by side, with slavery continuing to be practiced and legal in the Confederate states. This was an unreasonable thing and it would not be so in the long term. As earlier indicated, Lincoln had seen the Confederate states increase from a few states to an increasing number, and their military power was increasing. For instance, the Confederate troops had managed to push the federal troops to Washington in the battle of Bull Run in July 1861. This meant that the Southern movement was growing and posing a threat to the union’s stability and the federal troops, hence the only way to prevent more states from seceding and ending the spread of slavery to the North was to reinforce the federal troops and war against the Confederate states, which he successfully did.
