Introduction to the unit
Effective communication skills are a prerequisite for succeeding in business. Communication tools and activities connect people within and beyond the organisation in order to establish the business’s place in the corporate community and the social community, and as a result, that communication needs to be consistent, effective, and customised for the business to prosper.
Upon successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

◦Critique common formats of written business communication by recognising standard and nonstandard elements in examples of each format

◦Recognise the importance of intrapersonal communication in business environments
◦Recognise the impact of cultural differences on effective communication and understand the steps to become acculturated for international assignments
◦Prepare a crisis communication plan and know how to give and receive negative news

Not all sections of each textbook are included in the readings for this unit however we would highly recommend students familiarise themselves with all sections of both texts and especially “Management Communication” Chapters 6 & 7 which deal with writing skills and issues of plagiarism that all students should be aware of.
Reflective Journals Part A and B
Due date: 27 June (Part A) and 18 July (Part B)
Value: 50% (20% Part A + 30% Part B)
The purpose of the reflective journal is to have students progressively examine and demonstrate an understanding of all the material covered in this unit. Each module includes “Journal:” exercises. Unless otherwise specified it is expected that students will provide 1-2 paragraph short answers for each exercise listed. It is envisaged that the individual short answers will take approximately 5 minutes each.
As a student it is CRITICAL that you complete the journal tasks progressively. When done progressively these will assist you in understanding the material you have just watched/read and will assist you to develop the skills needed to successfully complete the other assessment tasks in this unit.
The reflective journal will be submitted electronically through the unit moodle site. Do not include the question text or any other text that is not your own original work or a correctly attributed quote. You will need to label each activity clearly using the subModule number together with the activity. For instance you would label the first Journal activity for subModule 3.1 as 3.1.1 and the second activity as 3.1.2 etc. Your entire journal should be submitted as a single .doc file (please ensure you frequently back-up your journal throughout this unit to reduce the risk of data loss).
You will be required to submit “Reflective Journal A” on completion of Module 7
