Obedience in the Army

Introduction
Milgram’s study mainly centers on the obedience and the role that personality plays in enhancing obedience. Bearing in mind that in every communal or society living obedience is a very inherent element rooted in the behavior of a person. In the army, the cadet seeks to issue orders which must be obeyed. However, the story of obedience is as aged as the story of manhood. It is questionable whether the obedience supposed to be showed even under a situation whereby the command is against an individual’s conscience. The essence of obedience is needed in every society. The organization of any society is highly threatened by any form of disobedience. Of all forms of organizations the very last place to allow any form of disobedience is in the army. In the setting of the army more obedience is needed than the questioning. Tasks in the battlefield require total submission since any reaction the contrary may lead to a defeat (Milgram, 1974a).
It is very essential given the nature of such duties owned by the army to the battlefield; to explore the vital role played by the cadet in making sure that orders issued are obeyed without unnecessary delays. Obedience in the army is not pegged on automatic rule of the conscience but there are forces and critical situations which dictate the obedience. The main aim at the mind of every cadet in a battlefield is learning how to play by certain essential steps which work hand in hand to increase the level of obedience. In the army; the cadets should bear in mind the fact that an officer will react in a given way is dictated by the kind of situation before him (Milgram, 1974b).
Long before the personality of the officer is considered, the situation supersedes the personality of the officer. There are scenarios in the battlefield when the bravery of the officer is very irrelevant before the hands of a powerful enemy. The rate of disobedience in the army in a battlefield is though rarely acknowledged brought about by one officer’s disobedience. Milgram states that in such a circumstance the majority will be forced to followed rebellious minority. Similar contention is that the relationship between the cadet and the officer has a very influential role as far as the behavior of the officer is concerned. When the cadets who in our case are crowned the authority get too close to the subjects, the obedience of the army deteriorates. The role of decision making is also worth experimenting (Milgram, 1974b).
Interestingly, army officers will always have a high regard to the commanding force only when confirmed that such force is the sole decision maker in the force. The line between the authority and the subject should always be well defined bearing in mind that lack of such defined line affects the obedience of the officers grossly. A lower ranking officer will not be taken with the legitimate authority that an officer of a slightly higher rank is taken. Obedience in both scenes will happen but a lower ranked officers command will not receive the same form of obedience that an officer of higher ranking would receive. The officer of the lower ranking is considered a peer by his juniors (Milgram, 1974a).
Obedience experimental tests help in understanding the behavior of human beings given different environmental settings. Soldiers in war will not obey commands because they feel that it’s their duty to do so.According to Milgrams experiments personality of the soldier plays an exceedingly major role in determining the behavior of soldiers. Personality is a variable which doesn’t stand on its own but to understand how it influences other people’s behavior, the salient features are worth re examination. In an ideal setting of an army, there is the established moral authority which demands obedience. The structure of the moral obedience is otherwise known as the authoritarianism. Such moral structure must be established by the cadets for the flow of the army and for the commands to receive obedience. It should be borne in mind that subjects will always react according the situation at a given moment. If an army officer watches a fellow officer dying through massive injuries then the officer will definitely repel against any form of command from the seniors to obey any other order (Milgram, 1965).
Conclusion
The military setting is a very experimental ground whereby the behavior of human beings can substantially be assessed. Considering the fact that decisions are made in a quick and a very organized way, the obedience to orders is worth reexamination. It takes a keen study to establish the nature of the different behavior of junior army officers to their seniors. The cadets need this study to efficiently handle the soldiers.
