My passion for furthering my education is steeped in my desire to continue my academic endeavors and broaden my opportunities. Enrollment in the Ph.D. program at the University of Houston would help me hone my skills, deepen my expertise and provide a smooth path to accomplishing my life goals. It will not only enhance my learning, but also deliver a more applicable reasoning within the researching and teaching environment. As time progresses, the business world becomes even more complex and the value of a good education becomes more of a requirement to soar to new heights.
With that in mind, I am here by applying for admission to the Ph.D. program in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management. I chose to apply to the University of Houston because of my admiration for the business department faculty’s research directions. I desire a career in research and teaching of management thus the Ph.D. program would be invaluable in helping me achieve these goals. My years of work experience and knowing that I strive in rapid learning environments, helps to make me a strong candidate for the doctorate studies program.
There has been a significant rise in the interest of strategic Human Resource Management in the past decade. I’m interested in the contemporary theories on strategic Human Resource Management and the different levels of integration within organizations. When the organizational strategy has not considered the implications to the human resource i.e. are there enough trained employees or do we need to employ more, the strategy runs a high risk of failure. Therefore it is vital to align the human resource with the organization’s strategy. In order to gain an appreciation of this concept and related issues, it is essential for me to have a strong grounding in the different models of Strategic Human Resource Management and its effectiveness in increasing organizational value, as well as gain a General Management perspective. This program would enable me to channel my quantitative and analytical skills towards examining business issues and would open up new avenues in research. Subsequent to earning a Ph.D., I would like to apply for a faculty position at a leading university; and research issues concerned with strategic human resource management integration as it affects linking people, strategy and performance with organization strategy.
I have come to a point where I want to face and conquer new challenges; it is my belief that the heights of life are reached through repeated self-transcendences; this is what I understand about the meaning of life. My time at Saint Xavier University has enhanced my work ethic and ability; it has improved my character and strengthened my willpower since my undergraduate studies. My professors have all been enthusiastically supportive of my decision to further my studies and my colleagues have often looked at me for assistance due to my collaborative skill set and business experience. I am by no means the smartest student in any capacity, but my perseverance, pursuits for excellence and my readiness to challenge my perceived limitations have enabled me to achieve despite great adversities time and time again.
Growing up in East St. Louis, IL where drugs permeates the streets, lack of proper education, increased single parenting homes and great poverty prevails, I looked to education as an opportunity to make a difference and strive for new heights in life. East St. Louis, a predominantly African American community, where the school systems lack the resources and opportunities needed to enhance the students. I flourished in this public school system through honor classes and prepared myself for college. My mother, seeing my passion and desire wished she could give me the world, but through accomplishing my educational and professional goals, she will see the world through my eyes.
I learned of the University of Houston’s Ph.D. program in Business Administration from the business school professors and became impressed with the emphasis placed on technical and analytical skills, general management orientation and rigorous research methodology. I look forward to learning from distinguished professors at the University of Houston, who will help me better understand how to conduct research on the cutting edge of organizational management. The business school’s strength in management commensurate with my research interests and I find the accomplishments of the faculty to be especially impressive, capped with the fact that there are several professors in the department whose specialty is management. The faculty’s reputation for excellent teaching, challenging course work and excellent facilities are added attractions.
