#1 – Demonstrate how the Catholic tradition is mediated in history and instantiated in culture this will require you to identify a time and cultural location of the
Catholic tradition and explain the impact that the historical and cultural context had on the Catholic beliefs and practices of that time and culture.
#2 – This should include at least one specific example from each of the following time periods: the early church community (prior to 1054), the Catholic tradition
prior to Vatican II and the Post-Vatican II Catholic tradition.
This means you will have a total of three examples of connections between Catholic tradition and historical/cultural context. The first example should be from
the pre-1054 church. The second example should be from the church between 1054 & the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). The third example should be an example from
after Vatican II.
#3 – Write a paper in which you:
• identify the historical/cultural context of each of the examples you are going to address; 10 pts
This will be the “introduction” of your paper. It will probably take at least two pages because you will need to state the three historical/cultural items (things such
as major events, changes in social structures, etc.) and with each of them you should identify and state the Catholic beliefs that were impacted. This would probably
take at least one well-written paragraph for each of those three “pairs” (a “pair” will be the historical/cultural/social item and the catholic aspect that was
affected.) These paragraphs are not meant to “connect the dots” in any sort of detail.
These paragraphs are simply statements of the two things that you’re going to put together in each of the time frames. “This paper will show that
historical/social/cultural event A (which occurred prior to 1054) impacted the beliefs/structures/teachings of the Church in area B. The second part of the paper will
show that a similar connection exists between historical/social/cultural element C and the church practices of D. The paper will conclude with a comparison of the
relationship between E & F which occurred after Vatican II”
• For each of the three do the following:
• identify the most important aspects of that time and culture that impacted the tradition;

• identify the important Christian beliefs and practices that were involved;
15 pts (5 pts each example)
• identify the impact of the historical and cultural context on Christian beliefs and practices that were involved (what changes occurred as a result of the
interaction between the tradition and historical/cultural context);

I’ve got these grouped together because you are going to do the same thing for each of the three “pairs” that you’ve identified in your introduction. When you write
keep A & B together in one section. C & D together in another section and then E & F in a third section.
In each of these sections you’ll spend at least a paragraph or two explaining what you mean by A followed by a paragraph or two explain what you mean when you use the
term B and then a few paragraphs that explains exactly how A impacted B and gives evidence to support that claim.
Think about things that you could use for item A: The fall of the Temple in Jerusalem; The Fall of the Roman Empire; The increased ability to travel; Expansion of
trade to Asia; The rise of Constantine, Various Emporers of Rome, expansion into Europe, etc.
Things that you could use for item C: Dissolution of political monarchies as the normative government structure, Discovery of “the new world”, the industrial
revolution, WWI, WWII, The theory of heliocentric universe, development of the printing press, the rise of Islam, etc.
For item E you could consider things like: the theory of evolution; the cold war; specific examples of increases in science & technology; the Vietnam war; the increase
in types of religious terrorism; the increase in secularist societies, the development of contraception, etc.
You can see that if you chose “the rise of Constantine” as your first item (item A) you would need to explain who Constantine was … what was the historical time that
you’re talking about … what you mean by the “rise” … from what to what …
Then for item B you would have to do the same thing. What do you mean by the terms of creed, magisterium, doctrine,
After that you would need to connect the dots between Constantine’s rise and doctrinal teachings of the church or the structure of the magisterium.
Then you would repeat that process for items C&D.
An outline of the paper would look like this:
1. Introduction (identifying & pairing up A&B; identifying & pairing up C&D; identifying and pairing up E&F)
2. Section 1: A&B (items from pre-1054)
a. Explain what you mean by A
b. Explain what you mean by B
c. Explain how A impacted B … What was it about A that caused B to change in the way it did
3. Section 2: C&D (items between 1054 and Vatican II)
a. Explain what you mean by C
b. Explain what you mean by D
c. Explain how C&D are related in some causal relationship
4. Section 3: E&F (items post Vatican II)
a. Explain what you mean by E
b. Explain what you mean by F
c. Explain how E affected F in some way
5. Conclusion (Would be a brief summary restating that what the paper has shown
a. The significance of item A for the church in the area of B
b. The significance of item C for D aspect of the church
c. That E had something to do with the church’s change in area F
If you wanted to use more than three pairs that’s fine, but don’t go overboard with lots of pairs (4 or 5 would be the max) and make sure that you do a good job for
every pair that you want to include in the paper.
Finally, note that the historical/social/cultural cause that you identify in each of those time frames may have an impact in the church at some later point in time –
one of the other time frames. For example some of the stuff that goes on in WW II (German concentration camps and the eventual establishment of Israel) may have
impacts on the church at Vat II or sometime shortly thereafter.
