This is a reflective journal regarding my placement experience while I was working at Berala Park. Berala Park is twenty-four hours nursing care that offers high quality services and care to clients of all ages. Additionally, Berala Park offers leisure and recreational activities. Berala Park services are categorized into three groups, which include health, lifestyle and activities (Berala on the Park, 2012). My stay at Berala Park lasted for twenty days. This presented a good opportunity for me to practice what I had learnt in class. This presented a good platform to integrate the therapeutic recreational activities in the workplace environment. This journal is based on the different learning objectives that I came up with, which were in line with the learning materials provided. These objectives were critical in assisting me gain practical skills.
Identify the recreational activities that clients view as important or enjoy the most.
The manner in which to get clients into participating in various recreational activities.
Identify the medical importance of some of the recreational activities.
Identify the way to handle clients.
Identify some of the occupational hazards and how they can be handled.
Identify the recreational activities
There were various therapeutic recreational activities that were implemented at Berala Park for the aged clients. They included gentle exercises during the morning hours; participation in different gaming activities, as well as participation in musical entertainment.
Developing skills needed for working with Children
Working with children is something that is quite interesting. In understanding the essential skills needed for working with children, I observed the supervisor’s behaviors, actions, and conflict resolution skills. The supervisor engaged children in physical exercises, games, and singing sessions. The main therapeutic activities in the camp included physical exercises during the morning hours, engaging in various games, and participating in singing (Friedberg, Friedberg & Friedberg, 2001). There was a lot of communication from the supervisor towards the children. This was critical especially during other activities apart from the routine exercises.
Physical exercises are critical for the development of children. The physical exercises are critical for the development of children. Indeed, exercises are good for the physical, psychological and social well-being of the children. Physical exercises are known to reduce body weight in children hence reducing the chances of type II diabetes (Virgilio, 2006). They also play a great role in reducing the blood pressure. In addition, exercises promote the presence of HDL, which is good cholesterol in the body. Furthermore, engaging children in the various activities facilitated bonding between children and the supervisor (Mayesky, 2012).
Understanding the overall program in the children’s camp
The programs in the children’s camp are designed to promote the well-being of the children. I held discussions with the supervisor in an effort to understand the way these programs were designed, organized and documented. The supervisor was better placed to explain this to me since he was the one in charge. Furthermore, I conducted a review of the documentation on children’s camps. This provided a hint on how these camps are organized and operated. This was critical in providing a general overview of how programs in children’s camps are implemented (Moffitt, 2011). I was also able to observe effective camp organization based on the reactions of the children in the camp.
Developing of appropriate activities
Children in the camp were engaged in various activities. However, there are those activities that were deemed to be the most appropriate for children. Coming up with these activities was not an easy thing (Owens, 1962). This required a deep consultation with the supervisor who was in charge of the camp. I talked to the supervisor, and he approved a storytelling competition as an activity that can benefit the children. Storytelling among children is critical in enhancing their language and communication skills. It also teaches children about moral lessons that are usually depicted in the stories. This way, this activity gained approval and the children were quick to embrace it (Fraser, Lum, Fraser & Fraser, 2009). After a keen observation, I found that the children eager to participate in other activities involving physical activities such as playing football (Saipe, 1999). They also liked singing and dancing. Therefore, I thought it wise to introduce storytelling sessions to complement the activities that were already programmed in the camp.
Evidence of learning
The development of an understanding of the essential skills for working with children was reflected in the final report. In this case, there are behavioral issues that were identified. The children in the camp were identified to be suffering from low self-esteem and poor social relations. In this regard, it was agreed that the introduction of interactive activities such as games, singing, and storytelling would be of great benefit. These activities would engage the children and make them active. In this case, they will enhance their self-esteem and promote their social life (Gardner, 1993).
The development of the final report was an indication that I had a basic understanding of the programs at the children’s camp. The final report included all aspects and programs that are implemented in the children’s camp. Therefore, it indicated that I had an understanding on how the programs were designed, organized, operated, and implemented in the camp.
There were several activities that were done to promote the well-being of the children. Some of the activities that were done at the camp include playing football, engaging in singing and storytelling. While playing football, the children were able to engage one another. This promoted their social relations and self-esteem. On the other hand, singing helped the children to boost their self-esteem as they were able to dance away their sorrows. In addition, this was critical for their social and emotional development. Furthermore, the storytelling sessions worked to boost the children’s self-esteem. Children were able to gain self confidence while telling stories, and they had an opportunity to hear stories from various backgrounds.
The experience that I had at the Children’s camp was great. I was able to practice what I had learnt in class into practice during my stay at the children’s camp. I was also able to develop the essential skills and establish an activity that was undertaken by the children at the camp. In this case, I introduced the storytelling sessions in the camp. This activity was a great success, and the children liked it a lot.
I would like to express my appreciation to the Save the Children organization for the opportunity to serve in their children’s camp. I was able to integrate what I learnt in class to the work environment. I discovered that children are very interesting as they presented an exciting opportunity for me. In the future, I will love to devote myself to working with children.
