Assignment Requirements

Assignment Task 3: Methodology Paper
Weighting: 45%
Length: 3000 words
Due date: Monday, 1st Sept. by 17:00 (AEST)
Aim: The purpose of this assignment is to relate what you have learnt on the course to planning a research project using qualitative methods. You are to provide a research design that focuses particularly on how qualitative methods could be used to operationalise research questions. Ideally this assignment should relate to your dissertation project. If you intend to use qualitative methods in your project then you should approach this assignment from that perspective. If you are not intending to use qualitative methods it is still recommended that you develop a research design and operationalise research questions that are related to your intended dissertation project. If you have not decided on a topic for study, then use a hypothetical research project of your own devising.
Instructions:
1. At its centre this assignment requires each student to discuss how they would operationalise research questions related to their dissertation project explicitly using at least two qualitative methods (note surveys are not typically qualitative and a case study is not a method but a design).
2. You should briefly identify the research problem and put it into context.
3. You should include a short literature review to situate the research. The literature review may be taken from your Literature Review course, but it should be no longer than 1.5 pages of this assignment and you should convert it into fresh words.
4. You should identify viable research questions that are derived from the context and the literature review.

5. You then outline your research design. This should include broad aspects of the design such as epistemological assumptions and levels of analysis, but most particularly the methods to be used. This should incorporate, where appropriate, issues such as data gathering, access and project management, sampling procedures, actual data gathering procedures and aspects of data analysis are all clearly explained.
6. The design and the choice of methods should be justified.
7. The significance of the research should be spelt out and its limitations addressed.
8. The assignment is written up and in many ways resembles a short project proposal.
9. The assignment is submitted through Turnitin.
10. Please read the marking criteria carefully and address all elements of it.
