My family has a close association with the world of exercise and sports. My military-trained father doubles as a tennis coach. Consequently, both my brothers and I have represented our schools in National inter-school tennis competitions ever since we were in Primary School. I grew up on the exercise regimen of my military dad. In this case, I was long prepared for the National Military Service by the time I turned 20. I spent 2 years serving the army in the Naval Diving Unit, and this was the most grueling period of my life. This is especially the 31-week Combat Diver Course conducted, which was designed and modeled after the US Navy SEALS’ own endurance training. Through the vigorous military trainings, regimental inculcations, and physical demands, I forged some of my most steadfast friendships and will never underrate how true camaraderie can be the greatest force behind a will to succeed. I also worked in the service industry as a barista, which enabled me to interact with different people. All my previous experiences have imbued in me a keen interest in fitness and wellness management. For this reason, I desire to pursue a Human Physiology Major at University of Oregon. I hope that I will be granted the scholarship to pursue my studies.
My sports and military training have established a strong foundation where understanding of the body is critical. This includes understanding of muscles, bones, skin and tissue. I am also passionate about nutrition, injury prevention, and body conditioning. These are factors that have contributed to the success I have experienced as a sportsman, naval diver, and health enthusiast. As I continue with my tertiary education, I look forward to the opportunity to study the scientific foundations of sports performance and the need for promoting awareness of physical activity to curb the rising obesity epidemic.
The academic approach to sports and exercise may be something new, but I see it as crucial to learning. This is with regard to the interrelation between psychology, physiology, and biomechanics, and understanding its impact in practice. I will need the laboratory-based experiences, the clinical skill preparation, and hands on training that I know the University of Oregon provides. This adds to my desire to apply for a scholarship that will enable me to realize my educational objective. All these will be necessary for me to graduate confidently knowing that I have gained adequate mastery at the Undergraduate level in order to excel in my field. In the next 10 years, I would love to pursue Physical Therapy for my graduate studies and go into private practice. I envision that, I will then have the time, expertise, and money to the campaign, fund, and promote ergonomics, exercise and wellness for underprivileged children. This will only be possible if I am granted the scholarship to study Human Physiology at University of Oregon.
I harbor positive sentiments with regard to the field of Human Physiology. In this age of growing affluence, the demand for exercise and wellness is growing and will continue to expand rapidly. The green movement is also inspiring a new generation of people to know about the benefits of healthy eating and staying fit. For myself, I also speak Mandarin as a second language. I believe that, since China has become considerably accessible in the sporting industry, my bilingualism will open doors of opportunities to learn their ways of training and allow me to tap into new wealth of knowledge. Thus, I am very hopeful that I might gain insight, and I will then be able to combine with what I will learn as a Human Physiology major.
