Your group will be assessed on your ability to research relevant articles, to provide analytical commentary on the significance of the articles to the tax profession and the appropriateness of the applicable law and also upon the group’s ability to make recommendations as to how the law can be improved.
Journal should contain article extracted from the following current sources:
(a) newspapers;
(b) journals ( professional);
(c) journals ( refereed);
(d) global business data bases;
(e) other internet resources.
You should not use a court report of a tax case as a journal article, although students may use an article analysing a recent tax case that analyses the impact of the principle that emanates from the case.
Content
Journal entry must include the following:
(a) a copy of the article at the beginning of each journal that they present and its source, including where relevant, the full internet address for any article derived from the internet. The date of using each website and the search engine through which the website was found must also stated;
(b) a summary of the article;
(c) a statement of the law and legal issues raised in the article;
(d) commentary on whether the applicable law is appropriate, if not, how it can be improved and why the article raises significant issues. The commentary should demonstrate an understanding of the article and the broader issues raised by the article, its relevance to the tax profession and any recommendations that you would make. The emphasis in this section should be upon critical analysis.
Note: You should approach your chosen journal articles in the first instance as a comprehension exercise. You will need to read the article a number of times before commencing to write. The written commentary should not be a rewrite of the article but should be your thoughts, reflection and critical analysis.
Presentation of Written Work:
Work submitted for assessment must comply with the following requirements:
• Journals must be typed (singled sided) on consecutively numbered sheets of A4 paper using 12 point font and double line spacing with a wide margin on the left side. Each page should be numbered;
• Pages must be securely bound/stapled with a title page clearly indicating:
(i) your name and student number,
(ii) group member’s names should be listed in alphabetical order,
(iii) course name and code,
(iv) (iii) research or journal title,
(v) lecturer’s name and due date.
• All sources of information and ideas must be acknowledged using footnotes for citation of references. A separate page containing your reference list or bibliography must be included with correct citations provided including internet web addresses used in completing the research paper. The date of using each website and the search engine through which the website was found must also stated.
• The research paper must contain proper footnotes in respect of every text or website used in completing the research paper.
• Must include in the footnotes and bibliography of their research paper all internet addresses that they have used. Required to quote the current URL address in which the material was cited and date of use of the particular URL address.
• Must submit a summary of their research methodology indicating how and where key source material was located.
• Must include in the summary of their research methodology each group member’s role and how the members worked together to produce the preliminary research and the final production of the research paper.
• Must provide a brief one quarter to one half page summary of each article used in completing the research paper. Students should indicate in what way the article was useful in the final production of the research paper.
• It is not appropriate for a student to merely refer the examiner to appendices attached to the research paper if the principles referred to in the appendices are central to the discussion of the research paper. Such principles should be provided in the research paper itself.
• Must provide at the end of their research paper as appendices, copies of all articles used in their research paper including internet materials (not chapters of textbooks).
• Must provide a word count.
