Each song should demonstrate at least one sociological concept, process or theory
Discuss why you chose each song, what concept/process/theory it relates, and how it illustrates the concept/process/theory
Your discussion will be graded from 0-5 marks, depending on choice of song, quality and insight offered

Suggested Format (1 page for each song)
Song: Miley, You’re a Good Girl
Artist: Jon Lajoie
Concept(s)/Theory: Gender, Sexuality
Discussion:When a pop star like Miley Cyrus generates a national discussion, only a pop song like Jon Lajoie’s Miley, You’re a Good Girl can appropriately frame the answers to the many questions sociologist ask. In a culture that regularly reduces women (usually nameless and often faceless women) to sexual objects, why is there public outrage when a former child star objectifies herself? Why are we not similarly up in arms about Robin Thicke who was dancing with Miley on the Video Music Awards stage?
Lajoie’s song captures the contradiction in R.W. Connell’s idealized or emphasized femininity that is most readily visible in cultural representations, but is also used when we perceive and judge others. On the one hand, cultural ideals celebrate women because of their physical beauty and seemingly sexual availability to men, and men like Robin Thicke who dominate these objectified women. On the other hand, paternalism is used to socially construct women as innocent, naive and in need of protection, especially from men like Robin Thicke. While Miley Cyrus illustrates how these ideals occasionally conflict (as when Lajoie sings about crossing an already Blurred Line), it is important to recognize both ideals reinforce male dominance, gender inequities, and patriarchy more generally.
