Survey Questions

Survey Questions
TASK: This assignment consists of four sections: first, a research question; second, appropriate sampling technique and, third, a list of 11 appropriate survey questions, and fourth, a list of any references.
The assignment will be graded out of 40 marks. (It is worth 10% of the final course grade)
Overall Format: Use the template in the CLEW Resources folder entitled “48-290 Survey Assignment Three Template Due Nov 24 2014.”
Your answers in Section 1 and Section 2 should be clearly written using sentences (complete all sections).
In Section 3, your goal is make your questions look like real survey questions. So where appropriate you do not have to use sentences (e.g., multiple choice answers which are numbers).
Section 4 is a list of your references and should to be formatted in APA, MLA or another formatting of your choice.
Section 1 (3/40)
“1a. What is your research question?
Instructions: You can use the research question from either of your previous assignments. Make sure this question is actually phrased as a question, with a question mark “?” at the end of it. There are no marks for 1a but marks will be subtracted if it is not completed.
“1b. State your independent variable(s) and dependent variable(s).”
Instructions: use a complete sentence to state your independent variable and another sentence to state your dependent variable. The reason you are being asked is because it will

Page 2 of 3 help you in searching for existing survey questions and also in the overall organization of your
survey questions. There are no marks for 1b but marks will be subtracted if it is not completed.
“1c. Which population(s) are you trying to learn about with this survey? (3/40)”
Instructions: In three to four sentences describe the population you are trying to learn about.
Section 2 (9/40)
“2. State what sampling method you would use to find your respondents and briefly explain in four or five sentences why do you think this method is appropriate? (9/40)”
Instructions: You have to briefly explain how you’re going to sample the population you are interested in researching. You can select an appropriate method from Chapter 5 of the textbook (Symbaluk 2014) and then clearly explain why you consider this to be a suitable to obtaining information from the population you are interested in. For example, snowball sampling while not probability based may be the most effective way of gaining access to a marginalized population. However, you are not limited in your resources (you have millions of dollars), so if you want to do a national survey then explain how this would be done.
Section 3: (28/40)
“3. What are your survey questions?”
a) The main idea in Section 3 is to organize a series of 11 (not 10, not 12, not 13) survey questions that provide information to answer your research question. In terms of the format, you must try to make it look like a proper survey. Therefore, you should use appropriate scales, provide appropriate choices to multiple choice questions, spaces in which to answer open ended questions (5 or 6 lines like a short answer on an exam) and so on. The questions should be appropriately numbered as if they were actually on a survey form.
Well a formal survey might include a series of demographic questions, in this assignment you cannot include any demographic questions like age, where you were born, sex, gender, or marital status. For this assignment, just assume these types of questions have already been asked elsewhere in the survey.
All of your survey questions have to logically provide information that helps answer your research question stated in Section 1a. Importantly, they cannot be light fluffy stuff. That is, all of your questions will be graded on their relevance to your research question and must substantially address some important aspect of your research question.
Question Checklist:
You are to compose only 11 questions in total, not 10, not 12.
The 11 questions must include six quantitative questions and five qualitative questions. The six quantitative questions will include the following:
? a. Of the six quantitative questions, two must be close-ended question using a Likert Scale, like the scale used in the Student Evaluations of Teaching forms at the end of each university course (6/40)
? b. Of the six quantitative questions, four must be close-ended questions that provide five different choices. (i.e. like a multiple choice question with five different answers to choose from) (12/40)
? c. Include five open-ended questions. All of these five open-ended questions must be directly and substantially relevant to your research questions. Make sure you include a space below each open-ended question for a respondent’s answer. Chapter 9 in Symbaluk (2014) provides guidance on writing qualitative questions. If possible, it might also be useful to watch some videos of interviews on your topic of interest to get ideas for questions. Each question is worth 2 marks (10/40)
Writing and Editing Survey Questions: In this assignment, you can make up your own survey questions. As well, you can look at other sources for your questions, but rephrase any questions you use from other sources in your own words and include the source in your list of references (see Section 4 below). No in-text citation is required beside the question because you are trying to make this Section 3 look like a real survey.
Test your survey questions. Print out your survey questions and do them yourself (not just read it). Better yet, have someone else complete your questions, that way they can help you catch any errors, and make sure the survey makes sense.
4. References Section
Utilizing an appropriate academic format of your own choosing (like APA, or MLA) provide a properly formatted list of any sources you used for your questions.
