The Israel Palestinian conflict is one of the longest conflicts that have been experienced in the world. The conflict began in 194 8 and has dragged up to today. The conflict has led to the loss of very many lives of both the Palestinians and the Israelites. The conflict has made the region to be security deficient. The major reason for this conflict is the fight over land where the Palestinians have refused to accept the settlement of Israelites in the current land of Israel claiming that this land belongs to Palestine and that the Israelites occupy the land illegally. However, other underlying issues for instance religion have been absorbed into the conflict thus making the conflict to become even much more complicated (Eisenberg & Caplan, 2010).
Israelis have a belief that they are entitled to Israeli which is the land that they live in today. On the other hand, the Palestinians have a belief that they have an entitlement Palestine which is the land in which they currently live. However, both the Palestinians and the Israelis claim to be the real owners of this land of which they identify using differing names. Both the religious Palestinians – Muslims and the religious Israelis – Jews hold deep beliefs that this land is genuinely theirs and that it was given to them by God who is referred to as Allah by Muslims and Jehovah by Jews. Both thus believe that it is insulting to God to let other people inhabit the land and or to give it away. The conflict has had far reaching effects which include deaths resulting from attacks both planned and suicidal and the problem of refugee in the region (Eisenberg & Caplan, 2010).
Jews and Palestinians have strong beliefs in their religions which affects their social, political and their economic lives. The Jews have a history of over 5, 750 years. They trace their origins to the ancient Biblical times. They evolved from a common religion and developed culture, customs as well as an ethical system that identifies them as Jews people without paying respect to the differences in their religious attitudes. From the ancient times, the Jews were conquerors and were also conquered by other tribes and communities. The Jews have survived all along from many years of massacres and persecutions and their spread in different nations of the world. Though they were to some level assimilated by the communities where they settled, the Jews have stuck to the components of their culture and their religion (Ben-Yehuda & Sandler, 2002).
The true religion of the Jews is Judaism. A central component of the Judaism religion is that God, who created the world made a special covenant with the Israelites – as in Hebrew. God made the covenant with Abraham who is the forefather of the Jews. In the covenant, the Jews were promised of blessings from God. They were also promised of God’s love as well as protection if they chose to remain obedient and faithful to the Law of God. Thus throughout history, the Jews have been referred to as the ‘chosen people’ due to a belief that they were singled from among the ancient people and given the Laws and blessings of Gods. According to the Judaic religion, Jewish people were selected to be the servants of God despite the fact that God is the creator of the whole universe, all humanity included. Traditionally, the Jewish people do not encourage the act of converting people to their religion. Converts are only accepted when they have gained a full knowledge of the religion and faith and demonstrated sincerity in acceptance of the laws that govern the religion. The definition and history of the Jews and the Judaism religion stands in a big way to affect their social, political and economic lives and has affected their position in the conflict between them and the Palestinians. Their religion gives them confidence and courage to fight for the land which they in which they are living today Sharot, 2011).
Both Muslim and Christianity trace their origin to Abraham. The Palestinians and the Jews are ancestors of Abraham. One of the major thesis about the alleged occupancy of Palestine by Jews and which is supported by most Christians is the claim of the promise of God to Abraham that the progeny of Abraham would be issued to Palestine and that the Jews are the sole descendants of Abraham thence the inheritors of the land – Palestine. The promise is found in the Jewish Tanakh which is the Old Testament of the Christians (Ali, 2003)
There is however another argument that according to the Bible and the Quran, that ‘God promised the Palestine to Jews’. This is found in the Bible – Revised Standard Version in Genesis 12:7 and Genesis 12: 1-2 and in the Qur’an 2:124. The Qur’an indicates that the exalting of Abraham did not automatically confer to the physical descendants of Abraham the comparable status which the bible tries to do (Ali, 2003)
The Palestine – Israel conflict is one of the longest conflicts in the world. The deep root causes of this conflict are the fights for land with inclinations of religions escalating the conflict even more. The conflict is unlikely to end soon.
