the end of Beowulf

the end of Beowulf
Paper instructions:
Write 300-500 word answers to four of the questions listed below (for a total of 1200-2000 words). There is no single correct response to any of these questions. This means that you can write an A exam choosing either side of the arguments. It’s how well you explain and support your answers that counts. All of these questions are discussed in the podcasts. You don’t have to agree with my interpretations. (Certainly many learned scholars do not.) But you should demonstrate awareness of the facts and interpretations presented in the podcasts. Also, many key passages that may help you formulate your answers are identified in the journal questions.
Does the end of Beowulf (the dragon fight and its consequences) praise the hero’s conduct or judge him negatively for excessive pride (attacking the dragon unnecessarily and refusing to take others to help him), for being motivated solely or mainly by a desire for glory and treasure, and for leaving the Geats unprepared to defend themselves from the attacks of their enemies once he is dead?
At the end of The Wife of Bath’s Prologue, does the Wife of Bath pretend to be dying (this is the key issue) when she knows perfectly well she is not hurt that bad to use guilt to gain control over Jankin?
Who is more outrageous, the fictional Wife of Bath or the real English woman Margery Kempe?
Whose judgment at the end of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is correct? Are the Green Knight, King Arthur, and Arthur’s court correct to praise Gawain for being “the most faultless man that was ever afoot” (2363)? Or is Gawain correct to curse himself for being “faulted and false” (2382)?
Does Pericles, Prince of Tyre fulfill Gower’s claim in his opening Prologue to provide “restoratives” (0.9) to readers and viewers, reiterated at the very end of the play as the hope that our “patience” will bring “New joy” (“Epilogue” 2357-58), because evil is punished, good is rewarded, and bad fortune reversed?
In Book 9 of Paradise Lost, can Adam’s decision to eat the fruit to join his wife Eve in breaking God’s command in order to share the punishment with her be defended?
What makes Beowulf being judges negatively by the people upon slaying the dragon is his great amount of bravery which is absent for most of the people. However, we cannot blame the people for having the negative impression to Beowulf because of his excessive pride in slaying the dragon wherein he aspired for single-handedly killing the dragon “your adventure, nor in the power of men, save mine alone” (2532-2533). Beowulf must have also wanted to slay the dragon probably of two reasons; one is to protect the people and another is to get the treasure of the dragon.
It was full inside
of jewels and intricate metal-work; an unpleasant guard,
ready, eager war-fighter held golden treasures
old under the earth; that was not an easy bargain,
to obtain for any man.
The treasure can be of priceless value because it is not a joke to obtain it. Because of the desire to obtain the treasure single-handedly, it leads him to his death making the people of Geats incapable of protecting themselves. Though given the goods, the character development of Beowulf is characterized as having a developed high-esteem in which the values of being humility that once he possessed in slaying Grendel seems gone.
“I would rather not
use a weapon if I knew another way
to grapple with the dragon and make good my boast
as I did against Grendel in days gone by.
But I shall be meeting molten venom
in the fire he breathes, so I go forth
in mail-shirt and a shield.”. In this line it is portrayed that Beowulf must use armour despite of his massive amount of strength and war skills to slay Grendel. The story implies the values of humility in which despite of having a number of successes that ona has accomplished, we must remain humble and not lose track selfless values.

3. The Wife of Bath is more outrageous than the real English woman Margery Kempe. The wife is more outrageous because of the unconventional manipulative attitude of the wife on getting married with men. In comparison to Margerie Kempe, who had visions of the devils, and was able to defend herself in the accusations of heresy is seen as a more justifiable act. If we are going to consider the medieval context, the Wife of Bath will indeed be more outrageous since the views of women at that time is to be modest because of the influences of the Church.
Though Kempe had visions of the devils, this might be an physiological effect of her due to a bearing of a child. While the Wife, on the other hand, is able to make the most of her marriages by getting the benefits that might be harnessed from them. Lines 638-640 implies her manipulative skills (“And of my tonge (I was) a varray jangleresse/And walke I wolde, as I had doon. /From hous to hous”) in which her way of speech and beauty attracted men to be married with her, until her old age came she was still able to be married to a knight.
Both stories presents an empowerment for women to stand for themselves if ever the standards of the society is depriving them to speak for themselves and adhering her needs as an entity of the society in which she belongs to. Both works also presents that women has also a capacity to use their sexuality in order to manipulate men. In the Wife of Bath, the old woman is able to manipulate the knight to be married with her due to helping the knight in answering the riddle that was asked by the Queen.
The use of the manipulative nature of Margery Kempe will be more acceptable since she used her sexuality in order for her to defend herself and prove not guilty while the wife uses her sexuality for her selfish gain.
4. Sir Gawain is rightful to receive the praise of King Arthur as being “the most perfect knight ever to walk the earth” (2363). Gawain might cursed himself for being “guilty and a liar” (2382) because as a knight, he must have a high expectation for himself. Sir Gawain is very loyal to his uncle who is King Arthur. Loyalty is one of the major attributes in order to be dubbed knight.
When the Green Knight obnoxiously entered the arena and began speaking ill even against the noblemen and the King, Sir Gawain was able to defend the honor of King Arthur by agreeing to the Green Knight’s challenge in replacement of King Arthur. Sir Gawain was able to defeat the Green Knight by cutting off his knight. Another situation wherein he showed himself as an honourable is to reject the offer of the Lady of the house to make love with her, he was successful in overcoming lust, by showing respect to the lady by rejecting her.
Overall, King Arthur is correct to praise Gawain.

6. It cannot be justified that Adam ate the fruit in order to join eve and share the punishment. Since during the time Adam ate the fruit, he has no idea what will happen if he will ate the forbidden fruit. He has an idea that the fruit must not be eaten, but because he loves Eve, he chose to follow Eve than to follow God. “But fondly overcome with Femal charm” (999), this may present that by nature; man is stuck between two forces which is the mind and the heart. Adam decided over heart despite that he is endowed with reason. I think that it is not an evil intention of Eve to let Adam eat the forbidden fruit, rather, she wants Adam to experience what she experienced in eating the fruit in which it could grant them knowledge that is beyond their consciousness prior to their departure from Eden.
It was mentioned from the Book of Genesis that Eve came from the rib of Adam meaning that Eve must be an inseparable part of Adam signifying that man needs a companion. Adam might have followed the request of Eve, because Eve is the most important for him. People also relates to the situation of Adam and Eve, when we tend to come up with a decision that might harm us while in the first place, we already know what is good and right. It is quite universal that man will always fall into sin for always following the cravings without the aid of reason. Because of this, they knew malice and began to be conscious because they are both naked. They were sent away from Eden from disobeying the order of God. But on the brighter side, it is still good that still have each other to look after one another as they try to survive life.
