The Excavation of El Bahan, Upper Egypt
The difference that exists between human beings and the rest of the living organisms is obvious. The ability to think and make decisions is a major difference that most people cannot fail to mention. However, according to Greene and Moore (2010), though human beings are different from the rest of the animals, there exist differences amongst themselves. The physical appearances, social organization, culture and beliefs of human beings who existed a century ago are to a large extent different from human beings of nowadays. A look at history shows that human beings have continued to develop as a result of change in time and space (Coulson and Campbell, 2001). In this regard, this paper is purposed to focus on the changes that has taken place in the lives of human beings. In order to achieve this goal, this paper will give a comparison of the lives of earliest human beings as evidenced by some of archaeological sites, Nabta Playa and E-75-8, El Nabta, in Upper Egypt.
To start with, it is imperative to mention that archeologists have established different ways of comparing the lifestyles of early men. These include; inter-site comparison and regional level synthesis comparisons among others. As such, the comparison of the above mentioned sites will be based on these comparison techniques.
This comparison shows the differences between any sites and accounts for those differences. As already mentioned, at site E-75-8, though there were clear indicators such as heartens and cattle bones to show that human beings would at one time be found in this place there were no houses to show that this was a settlement. This shows that man at this time had not yet learnt how to adjust to changes in his environment but instead used to move from one place to another in search for food and water among others.
On the other hand, at site Nabta Playa human beings had learnt their environment and had consequently discovered better ways of making a living as evidenced by the establishment of settlements. Additionally they had learnt different skills that made it possible for them to engage in various economic activities. For instance there was domestication of animals and crop growing. This means that it was the weather conditions were becoming worse and therefore forcing man to invent new ways of living that would ensure his survival. For instance, instead of relocating in search of water human beings would dig wells.
Regional Level Synthesis
This kind of comparison is concerned with the cultural traits of the inhabitants. First, both the Nabta Playa and E-75-8, El Nabta sites had clear evidence of human occupation. For instance, there were settlement in Nabta Playa and on the other hand there were heartens and cattle remains in E-75-8, El Nabta. However, though there were these evidences in the latter site, it is hard to know whether the place was one of the man’s places of residence or it was only used for ceremonies. Nevertheless the sites depict a similar culture for man. Human beings organized themselves into groups and carried various activities together. For instance the many cattle bones found in E-75-8, El Nabta, clearly show that the early man would associate with one other and do certain things together.
Additionally, Unlike in E-75-8, El Nabta, where there were no clear indicator of man involvement in agriculture, in Nabta Playa man did not wholly depend on hunting and gathering as the only source of food but instead he engaged in agriculture as already mentioned. This shows that there was invention of better tools that would help man in farming. As such, man was becoming refined in order to meet his needs.
Conclusively, as evidenced there above there were differences in the way human beings lived in terms of their culture, practices, social organization, the food they ate, and even the tools they used. However, the climatic conditions and the need to fit in the changing environment are the major reasons for the different lifestyles.
