In the story Young Goodman Brown, the author Nathaniel Hawthorne examines issues that we grapple with in the society even today. The examination of this Wildside Press LLC book reveals contemporary issues as I think. When I read this book, I can’t help to note that it resembles journeys or mediations that we make even today when we want to understand or even commit t something in our lives. This paper will look self examination the concept of humanity as well as the origin of names.
I feel that Hawthorne must have wanted to assert his self examination as an extension beyond. By this fact we therefore get an analysis of soul searching and self examination. In modern times, the question of faith though not largely discussed at length, places importance by the fact that there is no quite definite diction to secular or religious assignment. I feel that Hawthorne is relevant, by presenting that Goodman Brown had thought that he is religiously inclined to Christianity and God but his journey reveals that he is evil and far much worse since it started from his ancestor. A close examination may reveal that some of the characters we have and even views may be mirrored in our ancestral spirits though we assume that we are a new generation, how wrong!
On another level, I disagree with Hawthorne, on Goodman’s change of his world view. I feel that, just due to the fact that unknown history of my origins does not reveal exactly of what I would like it to be or does not seem right, should not be the pillar upon my ascent to doom. This representation of humanity leaves a lot to be desired and in my view Goodman should not be presented like this if he is to be real in the modern society.
In addition, I like the allusion that Hawthorne makes the reader interested to know more, about witchcrafts and the era of Puritanism in New England. After, all the suggestion that Rome is never built in one day is encouraging to someone.
Moreover, the idea of presenting Goodman and his wife Faith in names that spell twist and turn in their lives, Hawthorne using irony, cleverly makes me curious about the origins of my names and the original intended meanings. It may be very interesting to do a research on why my name rather than any other name (Hawthorne, 2005).
In conclusion, I am of the opinion that, this story is a must reader that is well crafted by a brilliant author. Despite the fact that he never made much of his writing, I feel interested to read his other works in the ‘Mosses and the Old Moses’, as well as reminding of a good reading, the Scarlet
