Adolescence – a period in which various critical changes take place. While many teenagers go through this period without any major difficulties, a few experience serious behavioral and psychological problems. These problems may affect an individual indirectly or directly, disrupting their lives and the lives of those surrounding them. According to clinical practitioners and other experts, there are three broad categories of problems regarding psychosocial problems in adolescence: substance abuse, externalizing disorders, and internalizing disorders (Steinberg, 2017).
Substance abuse indicates the maladjusted use of drugs, which include legal drugs such as alcohol or nicotine; illegal drugs like marijuana, ecstasy, or cocaine; and prescription drugs like sedatives or stimulants. It is still considered illegal for adolescents to use marijuana without a prescription, even in states that have legalized marijuana (Steinberg, 2017). Externalizing disorders refer to when a young individual’s problems are outward and exhibited in behavioral problems. This can be considered “acting out.” Common externalizing problems during adolescence are antisocial aggression, truancy, and delinquency. On the other hand, internalizing disorders are when a young individual’s problems are inward and exhibited in cognitive and emotional distress, like anxiety or depression.
I believe these problems emerge due to the sudden developments individual’s experience in adolescence combined with their social context. One ongoing situation blends with another, creating a new situation. In turn, the result is various factors coming together. For instance, a depressed teenager may experience problems with their peers, leading them to antisocial peers. Here, their chances of developing conduct problems increase. Therefore, the first situation led the teenager to the second situation, paving a path ahead.
During my adolescent period, internalizing factors emerged. I suffered from anxiety and stress over daily hassles and certain life events.
