Personal Assessment
Chapter 7
Chapter 7 is my preferred section concerning feedback. According to my experiences, I feel it is highly important to have a good feedback. Feedback can either build someone or crush their spirit. The kind of feedback an individual receives affects how they perform a certain task or duty. Some people acquire motivation through positive feedback, and they end up accomplishing a given task. On the other hand, individuals who receive negative feedback in the middle of doing the task end up leaving it halfway done. Negative feedback can demotivate a person and crush their continuity spirit. Personally, I tend to put much importance to the feedback I get especially from my clinical officer back in nursing school. “Feedback tells people how well they are progressing towards those goals” (Robbins &Hunsaker, 2012).
I undertook a feedback assessment test from the textbook to ascertain what my feedback style was and I managed to attain a score of 16. According to the test, I have tremendous skills at providing feedback. I love giving people feedback particularly when it is due. However, I have learned that not everyone is particularly interested in receiving any feedback, so sometimes I hold it in instead. Sensitive people always focus on the negative side of the feedback rather than the positive.
I undertook exercise #1 in page 117 with my husband. I gave him a positive feedback by pointing out the positive changes he has been practicing. I mentioned about how he has taken into account managing his time by being careful with how he spends it by focusing on achieving his dream of being an engineer. I noted that he responded positively to positive feedback than negative feedback. Additionally, giving him negative feedback had no results unlike when I gave him positive feedback on all the things he did right. He continued practicing the good deeds that I applauded him for. Upon asking him about his reaction when I gave him the feedback, he said that he feels more confident and proud of himself when I focus on the positive stuff. Focusing on the positive feedback uplifted his self-confidence as well as his spirits. “Positive feedback is perceived more readily than negative feedback” (Robbins &Hunsaker, 2012).
Some individuals believe that giving feedback is about focusing on correcting the mistakes that one has committed. Personally, I have experienced such a situation with some of my clinical officers. Some of them concentrate on giving me feedback based on my mistakes, which in turn kills my spirit for the entire session. Fortunately, other instructors focus on providing the positive feedback and correct an individual when a mistake is committed by showing them how they can improve in that area. I like being given feedback especially when am doing a task so that I can be sure that I am on the right track though sometimes I prefer not to ask when I feel that the other person will give me a negative feedback. For me, feedbacks are imperative, they build me and I always try to improve where necessary.
According to the strength finder, Restorative is one of my strengths. Being restorative means that, I am an individual who finds ways to better myself through changes and corrections. As a restorative, sometimes I have the urge to help the people around me to conquer their fears and weaknesses so that they could overcome their failures. Feedback is the only way that could grant me this access by positively influencing the young and the old by raising their self-confidence as well as their self-esteem through positive feedback. My strengths as a restorative allow me to correct certain problems that might affect the people around me. I would give negative feedback where it is necessary and provide a solution that could correct the problem. Both positive and negative feedback play a significant role in building a character of an individual. They shape our mindset and our view of particular tasks and goals.
Chapter 16
Teamwork style plays a huge role on how tasks will be done within a group. Having a group that works together requires a lot of commitment and patience. I conducted the assessment on page 257 on; what is my teamwork style? I managed to attain a score of 24. As per the results, I lack certain aspects that a team member should possess. However, I have no problem working with a group, but this also depends on the other members of the group.
I embarked on application question number three in page 273 of the textbook. Group members need to trust one another in order to accomplish the set goals and tasks. Trusting one another means that the group members acknowledge the task ahead of them and they work together towards achieving them. In addition, trust ensures that the group members perform their individual tasks with integrity without depending on one group member. On the other hand, mistrust leads to incomplete work or tasks mainly because the group members did not trust each other enough to provide substantial work or one group member did not trust the capabilities of the others and embarked on finishing the work on their own. Group members should have complete faith with each other to avoid wastage of time which could be as a result of not being able to settle on a solution since the group members disagree with the ideas of a particular group member. Time management is an important aspect when it comes to project completion since it allows team members to settle on ideas on time as well as it enables them to have quality time of conducting extensive research on the topic of discussion. Therefore, for a group to function effectively, group members need to have faith in each other in order to work as a team towards the goal.
I applied the lessons I learned from the application question in my group project from class, and we learned to trust each other since we all shared a common goal of completing the project on time with substantial materials. Eventually, we managed to finish the project on time with good work materials. Trusting each other meant that, each group member was assigned a particular question which they had to research on then we would meet and discuss the findings. We had faith that each and every one would accomplish their assigned tasks with diligence. Everyone was equal and no one considered themselves better than the other, so we worked together by appreciating individual effort in the group.
According to my strength finder, I am an achiever; I work hard towards achieving my set goals and tasks by being productive and busy. These aspects shaped my role as a group member in my class project. As an achiever, I was attracted to individuals who had the same work ethics as mine which played a huge role in ensuring we worked together diligently and earnestly to finish the project on time. Gathering feedback on the work progress also enable me to correct where necessary to produce excellent work. I was also well prepared with points from individual research.
I could develop this strength through engaging into numerous programs that require a group work effort. Continuous group work projects will expand my knowledge of different individual characters, and I will be able to gain more understanding of what I should contribute as a group member.
