American political parties
1-we would like you to determine whether the two largest American political parties are clearly different (what some people refer to as the divide between “red and blue” states) or whether they are quite similar in their views ( “tweedledum and tweedledee”). Go to the Web Links tab in your Course Menu (or to the links below this page) and locate the links to the Democratic and Republican National Committee websites. Go to each of these sites (note: the opening page of each of these sites usually has a request for money, but just click the “continue” button and you will arrive at the main page:) and, using some search creativity discover the views of each party on any TWO of the following issues: abortion, the war on terrorism, jobs, and public education. Describe those positions briefly. Do you think the principles of the two parties are pretty similar or quite different? Are their positions worded in ways that permit you to learn exactly what they will do or are they too ambiguous to distinguish (in other words, do they propose specific policies or just speak in broad generalizations)?

2- I want you to evaluate how well your Congressperson represents YOU. To do this you need first to determine who your current Representative is. Go to the Project Vote Smart Home Page (a site aimed primarily at educating and encouraging college age voters). The link can be found in Web Links on your left-side menu or at the icon beneath). At the top of the page you will see a link to Find Your Candidates and Elected Officials. Enter your address. Only use Flagstaff if it is your permanent residence. When you arrive at your STATE page, scroll down and CLICK ON the name of your U.S. House (Congressional) Representative (NOT the Arizona State Representative). This should take you to your representative’s page. On your Representative’s page CLICK ON the link labeled Key Votes and then expand it. For this exercise you are to select three votes cast by your Representative in 2011 or 2012 on issues that appear to be of interest to you AND which appear to be controversial. If there are at least 100 votes for each side, you can consider it controversial. If you click on the issue it will take you to a listing of each specific bill on the subject on which the House voted. For each of these three votes, make a note of the bill # (usually H.R. xxxx) and how your representative voted. In your essay compare your views with your Representative’s votes on these three issues. Do you think your Representative is representing you well? Would you be inclined to vote for their re-election in 2012 based on these findings? Explain.
