Abstract:
Nowadays people seek for new technology to interact with everyone and to be updated with everything around them. In this era most of the things are connected to internet where people can get more knowledge from. In addition, more things are being created and spreading around the world. One of the most important examples that people are addicted to and became from their routine is “Wi-Fi”. People now are competing between each other when it becomes to create new things related to technology, so one of the most popular and usable apps that can be connected to “Internet and Wi-Fi” is (Snapchat). This research will show how can these three things be connected to each other and be a part of people’s lives. Finally, this research contains a field study as approval to people’s opinions, and there will be more evidence about this topic while going through it.
Introduction:
Nowadays everyone can see how this world would be nothing without using internet. Internet and Wi-Fi allow people to connect to different kind of apps in their smartphones or other devices. People with different ages use Wi-Fi. For example, parents allow their children to play with different games in their iPads, adults connect to Wi-Fi and internet to contact with friends and even old people can use Wi-Fi to share some moments with others. Anyhow, Wi-Fi and internet are things that people cannot get rid of easily, because most of the things in people’s lives cannot be used without them. Students’ studies are connected to internet, employees’ works are connected to internet as well, and so many other things, so this time that people live at depends on technology and internet.
Many people say that internet and Wi-Fi are bad and could harm people in many different ways. This could be a true fact, but the big question is, can people live without internet? Internet and Wi-Fi now are not only somethings to entertain people or things people use for fun, they are things that people depend on in most of their times. There are different perspectives for people with they hear the word internet or Wi-Fi, some say that they affect people in a negative way while others say there will be no effects for using them.
The use of internet and Wi-Fi are increasing dramatically these days. Snapchat is one of those apps that people are using nowadays to share their moments with their friends for fun. So, snapchat is an app that can be under Wi-Fi, people cannot use it unless they have internet or Wi-Fi. The phenomenon of snapchat could be dangerous for people and they should be careful while using it. So, this research will confirm many things related to internet, Wi-Fi and snapchat such as people’s use of internet and the percentage of people who are using snapchat daily, etc.. According to Andreessen (n.d.), internet and Wi-Fi were and still a box full of information, secrets and magic.
Background:
History of the internet
The Internet Society was formed in 1992 by Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn, two of the “Fathers of the Internet”. Their main goal / mission was to promote the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world. For more than 20 years, the Internet Society has also played an important role in informing and creating the history of the Internet. The Internet Society’s foundational pillars, technology, and Policy have found many ways that have helped to connect the world, supported the development of fundamental Internet technology, and promoted transparency and bottom-up approach in addressing global Internet governance issues. Believing that “the Internet is for everyone,” the Internet Society has worked since its founding to make that goal a reality.
History of Snapchat
One of the most used app in social media, with over 100 million daily active users is Snapchat, which was launched in September 2011. Snapchat was brought to life by three founder; Evan Spiegel, Reggie Brown and Bobby Murphy in their college years. The story begins at Stanford University, where the idea for a photo sharing app is brought to life by three founders. It all started by Evan Spiegel who was born, on June 4 in 1990. Southern California. In 2008, you’ll find the young protagonist at Stanford University, the playground for Silicon Valley’s brightest stars. That is where Evan met Reggie Brown, the second founder during his freshman year. The two of them joined Kappa Sig together, Which is where they met Bobby Murphy, Snapchat co-founder and the programmer behind the app. But this was all before Snapchat existed. By 2009, Spiegel and Murphy were already testing out their entrepreneurial skills, launching Future Freshman LLC. It never really picked up speed. Eventually, April 2011 rolled around. Spiegel and Brown were about to complete their junior year at Stanford and Murphy had already graduated. Reggie had this idea, “I wish these photos I am sending this girl would disappear,” said Brown. Soon after, Spiegel had heard about the idea and was jazzed about it. And so the idea for Snapchat was born. But back then they were calling it Pictaboo. Murphy, Spiegel, and Brown were all working on it. They spent all summer working on the app. Evan drew the ghost logo that is still used today. Spiegel was CEO, Murphy was CTO, and Reggie Brown was CMO. Picaboo launched in July of 2011. By the end of the summer, it only had 127 users. In August 2011, drama got the best of our young founders. After a summer of working on the app together, Brown and Spiegel got in a fight over the order of the names as they appear on the technology patent, as well as the equity splits. Brown wanted 30 percent equity. Spiegel and Murphy disagreed. They booted him from the company, locking all the emails and back-end systems. Then Spiegel and Murphy changed the name to Snapchat, and started telling their friends. But the school season started back up, and as user numbers approached 1,000, the team noticed a spike in activity from 9am to 3pm. By April of 2012, the company had grown to 100,000 users.
Literature View:
The wide spread of media has the power to influence both negative and positive, with respect to: Social media might have a lot of good benefits such as increasing knowledge by the search engines provided or the easily shared articles, but that does not mean that it would not lead to certain changes in a person’s behavior. College students’ network moral loneliness behavior happens. This kind of network moral problems lead to the ‘lone wolf’ behavior mainly in the following whole: a. Network unethical language. So college students’ network behavior remains random. They fully closure their emotion and forget the moral behaviors. Some wild or uncultured language freely is taken lightly. A study showed that the majority of the students are able to stable their own words and work. But there is still a large fragment of college students that use the Internet slang language in their homework or research. It demolished the network morals.
Not only does it increase your knowledge and affect your behavior, but it also increases your networks and social circles. Many industry insiders were shocked when statistics showed the percentages of the usage of social media networks, for example Snapchat, which allows users to send photo messages that automatically delete themselves shortly after being viewed, the percentage of snapchat daily users that contribute contact are 65%, also the average number of photos shared on snapchat every second is 9000 snapchats every second. Snapchat even turned down a $3 billion buyout offer from Facebook last November. It now seems that Snapchat made an extremely intelligent decision, as the messaging service’s popularity has skyrocketed since then. Snapchat is now being valued at an incredible $10 billion. Snapchat is now the third most popular social app among millennials; with a 32.9% penetration on the demographics’ mobile phones, trailing only Instagram (43.1%) and Facebook (75.6%). This data indicates that the app is now more popular than Twitter, Pinterest, Vine, Google+ or Tumblr among those aged 18 to 34. Snapchat’s penetration is even more powerful among the coveted college-aged demographic, with 70% of college students reporting posting on Snapchat at least once a day compared to 11% reporting posting on Facebook with the same frequency.
Data Gathering:
To prove our research we developed nine survey questions, the were responded by 36 people; 18 of them were students that are under the age of 26, and 18 were non-student that are above the age of 27. The nine survey questions were divided into three parts; the first six were specifically about snapchat, the next two questions were about the Wi-Fi or internet, and the last questions was a general question to test society on if they can survive a whole day without Wi-Fi.
Q1: How many hours a day do you spend on the internet?
Q2: Can the internet cause damages to the users?
Q3: How many times a day do you check Snapchat?
Q4: How many Snapchats do you send a day?
Q5: In your opinion, what is the best thing about Snapchat?
Q6: Do you screenshot Snapchats that was sent to you?
Q7: What is the most issue you face while using the internet?
Q8: Why do you use Internet/Wi-Fi?
Q9: If you have been asked not to use the internet/Wi-Fi for a whole day, can you?
After distributing the survey and taking the responses back, they were interviewed about their choice of answers. Short simple questions of why the chose this answer.
Data Analysis:
After getting the response from all 36 people, the results were not very shocking; everything was as predicting before. The students used the Internet and Snapchat more than the non-students.
Q1: How many hours a day do you spend on the internet?
Both factions spend 5-7 hours a day for work or school work, when in the interview a question was asked “How many hours a days do you spend on the internet for both pleasure and work?” Students answered with more than 10 hours a day for things like Snapchat, Tumblr and Youtube, but non-students on the other hand said “there is no time to go surf the web for fun”.
Q2: Why do you use Internet/Wi-Fi?
Here they were given six options to choose from; socialise, study, shop online, youtube catch up on TV shows and Pirate movies/series/books. The most choose was to socialise, in the interview they students explained “because we have our phones in the palms of our hands all day, and the easiest thing to do is to open social media”. The second most chosen is pirated movies, in the interview a question was brought up about how many do you pirate a day? they answered “In a week maybe 5 to 10 movies or TV shows” they were also asked if they know its illegal? They said yes while laughing. On the other hand non-students mostly choose socialising for the same reason and they also picked online shopping, they explained “because we don’t have time to go shopping physically”.
Q3: Can the internet cause damages to the users?
Both sides agreed together on yes internet can cause some damages, and when asked in an interview they were asked what kind of effects they gave many answers such as lost sight, neck pain, lack of social gathering and lack of face to face meeting.
Q4: What is the most issue you face while using the internet?
There was three options for this question; speed, privacy and paying for online services. Speed got most of the answers, when asked about did they tried to fixed? the said “Yes, but after two or three months it goes back to being slow.”
Q5: How many times a day do you check Snapchat?
Students (under 26) checked snapchat more that 8 times a day, non-students (above 27) checked Snapchat 5-7 times a day, that wasn’t a surprise because students these days check social media in general during class time, rather than non-students like workers doesn’t have as much time or they rather do something else.
Q6: How many Snapchats do you send a day?
Both students and non-student choose 1-3 times a day. The answers were very shocking from the students side, because on a daily bases students on Snapchat stories all have more than 50 seconds which equals to 5 videos. The third and most chosen option was connecting with people all over the world
Q7: In your opinion, what is the best thing about Snapchat?
In this question they were given three options; first, you do not have to talk to everybody, which 12 of them answered with in the interview they explained that they don’t like most of the people they have met before. Second was the video stays for 24 hours only, 10 responds was in and they also explained in the interview “because we put silly videos we liked to have it for 24 hours and sometimes even less”.
Q8: Do you screenshot Snapchats that was sent to you?
Non-Students side answered no and in the interview they said “I screenshot only if it is my daughter/son in a decent looking picture”. Students on the other hand said always especially if it was a funny picture.
Q9: If you have been asked not to use the internet/Wi-Fi for a whole day, can you?
Both factions answered with “Yes I can spend a whole day without internet!” but later on the interview they changed their minds and 30 of them said maybe and the six rest said no they cannot, they explained “because in 2016 we have watches that have apps on them such as Twitter and Facebook”.
Conclusion:
These days, individuals look for new innovation to associate with everybody and to be upgraded with everything around them. In this time the vast majority of the things are associated with web where individuals can get more learning from. Likewise, more things are being made and spreading the world over. The Internet Society was framed in 1992 by Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn, two of the “Fathers of the Internet”. Their principle objective/mission was to advance the open improvement, development, and utilization of the Internet for the advantage surprisingly all through the world. More than 100 million every day users on Snapchat, which was propelled in September 2011. Snapchat was enlivened by three originator; Evan Spiegel, Reggie Brown and Bobby Murphy in their school years. The story starts at Stanford University, where the thought for a photograph sharing application is enlivened by three organizers. It began by Evan Spiegel who was conceived, on June 4 in 1990. Southern California. The boundless of media has the ability to impact both contrary and constructive.
Recommendation for Future Work:
Internet society has a huge impact on people whether it was in a positive or in a negative way. Internet and Wi-Fi is a huge and important thing for people, and no one can live with it especially in the current era that people live in. Nothing is perfect at the end, and current technology must be developed, everything is going to change later on and ne technology is going to be discovered. One of the future recommendations that this research support is to provide/apply more privacy among social media or apps such as Snapchat. The second recommendation is a suggestion that most of people agree on which is applying Wi-Fi connection everywhere for free such as at streets, cafes, restaurants, gardens, malls, airplanes and other places that people attend most of the time. And most importantly people demande faster Wi-Fi and free online services.
