Find a subject. Video or audiotape speech samples of at least 20 minutes (at least 2 observations).
If you are not doing a study of your family members, make certain to have the legal guardian or the participant in the study sign the consent form.
1- Videotape or audio-record natural conversation. You should record at least 20 minutes of spontaneous conversation. You may want to prepare some questions for an informal interview.
2-After you are done with data collection, transcribe your data.. Your transcription can be in standard orthography but you need to use phonetic transcription for the child’s utterances.
3-Analyse the data for the following categories:
Phonological processes: Identify and explain phonological processes you found in your data
Analyze enough sample words or examples to be able to prove your point.
Syntax: Identify and explain the types of utterances that the child uses, look for overgeneralizations of rules, omission of or errors in sentence- or phrase-level rules.
(e.g. improper word order, improper formation of questions and negatives, transfer of structures from native language etc.). Calculate the child’s Mean Length of Utterance(MLU)
Morphology: look for over regularizations, omissions or additions of morphemes.
It is important that your data is rich enough to have explanatory power. You do not need to transcribe every thing, but the segment that you select should be representative so that you can make meaningful generalizations. Present your findings in the form of a chart to show your examples systematically and clearly.
