1. Summarization of Motivational Interviewing (2-3 pages)
Write a minimum of 2-3 pages about the technique of Motivational Interviewing. Include information about it’s origins, the foundational aspects of the technique and how it can be implemented in a substance abuse counseling setting. You can use sources provided within Blackboard, as well as additional sources, and all sources should be appropriately cited in APA style.
2. Watch Videos on Blackboard and critique
You will watch 3 videos on Blackboard that depict a counseling session with a client who is resistant to make a certain change and the counselor is using Motivational Interviewing techniques. You will critique the videos in each of the 16 categories listed below, which are detailed later in this document. Scenario 1
You are addicted to crack cocaine. You smoke anywhere from twenty-five to fifty dollars worth per day. To help finance your habit, you have begun to pawn important possessions including jewelry, stereos, and other household items. For the past two days you have not been at work. Because of your spotty attendance your boss insisted you receive an assessment before you can return to work. This is your second appointment.
Scenario 2
You are addicted to Valium and Xanax (tranquilizers) and to two different pain killers (Vicaden and Codeine). Your normal daily dosage is four Valium, five Xanax, and three to four Codeine pills. The doctor began to prescribe these drugs as a result of a back injury in a car accident two years ago. Now the doctor is no longer willing to prescribe the drugs in the increasing dosages you feel you need so you are secretly seeing three different doctors for prescriptions. Your family found you passed out in the front seat of your car and insisted that you seek an assessment for your addiction. No one in your family is aware of how much you use. This is your second appointment.
Scenario 3
You are a young, urban professional who works in a bank. You make a significant amount of money and have recently begun to attend parties where people are using speedballs (heroin and cocaine mixed together). You don’t feel that this is a problem because you only use on weekends. However, your spouse is concerned about the amount of money you are spending (several hundred dollars each weekend) and the amount of time you are devoting to these parties. He/she is insisted that you seek an assessment. Previous usage has amounted to experimentation with marijuana and cocaine but no addictive patterns of use. There is, on your father’s side, a history of alcoholism, however. This is your second appointment.
Motivational Interviewing Ratings: Higher and Lower Skill Levels
1) MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING STYLE OR SPIRIT:Motivational Interviewing style is an empathic, collaborative approach and handled resistance skillfully instead of head-on while consistently aiming to elicit the client’s motivation for change. Motivational Interviewing style is one of calm and caring concern and an appreciation for the experiences and opinions of the client. Motivational Interviewing style conveys empathic sensitivity through words and tone of voice, demonstrates genuine concern and an awareness of the client’s experiences, and avoids advising or directing the client in an unsolicited fashion.
