GENERAL INFORMATION (10 points)
Indicate the style period/era and the date of the composition. Indicate the composer, lyricist, and the performer. Describe the styles or genres for each song. How are the songs related? In general discuss what is similar about the two songs and what is different?
Choose four of the seven topics: (10 points for each of the four topics discussed)
Singing style, performance style, text, instruments, rhythm, dynamics, form
Discuss what the singer does with his/her voice. Consider pronunciation, the quality of the voice (trained/untrained), and type of singing like blues, crooning, scat, classical, theatrical, country, belt, or shouting. Does the singer have a wide range of high and low pitches? Does the singer hold out long phrases, or is it a more choppy style? Does the singer slide like a blues style? Evaluate the quality of the voice.
Consider both the singer and instrumentalists. Discuss any improvisation or artistic freedom in the performance. Is the song performed by a soloist, or a soloist with backup singers, or by a group? Anything unique?
What is the song about? Does it tell a story (a ballad), or is it an event song? Do the lyrics reflect the era in which it was written, and if so, how? What type of language is used (formal, slang, etc.)? Is there any poetic interest like rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia, etc.
List the instruments you hear on the recording. Discuss how the choice of instruments reflects the time period, like those of the minstrel show, or rock and roll for example. Are the instruments strictly for the accompaniment of the singers or are there instrumental passages? Is there an instrumental introduction? Is there anything unique about the instrumental performance?
Is the beat prominent? Is there a backbeat or syncopation? Any Latin-inspired rhythms? Can you determine the meter? Is the song “percussive,” and if so, how? Discuss the tempo of the song. Are the rhythm instruments prominent?
Describe the dynamic level and discuss changes in dynamics throughout the song, if any. If there are changes, why, and where do they occur?
Analyze the structure of the music and describe (AABA, blues, strophic, verse/chorus, or other). Is there much repetition in music or lyrics? Think about repetition and contrast in text and/or music.
CONCLUSION (10 points)
How does each song selection represent the typical song of its era or genre? Was the song the beginning of a new style, or does it recall an earlier era?
