Moles of Pea Gravel This experiment envisions to filling the lab room with pea gravel. You may have a similar life experience of needing to know how much gravel would be required to fill an area that you would like to landscape. In order to transport it in your truck or trailer, you must know how much that volume of gravel would weigh (you don�t want to exceed the weight limit of your vehicle and ruin the suspension). Your task in this lab is to design an experiment(s) that will enable you to:
1. Measure the lab�s width=787.4 cm, length=1059.18 cm, and height=332.74 cm
2. Determine the density of a sample of pea gravel. The determination should be of a representative sample (i.e. 35-40 pea gravel particles). Make at least three independent measurements (on different samples) and average the measurements to get more representative data. (See data table below).
3. Estimate the total volume of gravel you would need to buy to completely fill the lab room from the floor to the bottom of the cement ceiling �rafters�. We will assume that all of the lab benches, hoods, and utility pipes will be removed before starting the project.
4. Calculate the total mass of gravel required to fill the room (in grams and metric tons)
5. Calculate total number of individual pieces of gravel required to fill the room.
6. Calculate how many moles of pea gravel you would need to fill the room. There will be a bucket of gravel available from which to select your sample. Equipment available in the lab room includes balances, measuring devices, tape measures, etc. Your report should include 1. A very brief description of how you determined the density of the pea-gravel.
2. A brief description on how this experiment changed (or not) your understanding of the mole concept.
