Scenario description
Vancouver Kayak Rental (VKR) company is going to go on-line and provide a Web application based on a Linux platform (assume HTTP service running on the Linux CentOS 6.x machine). This application should allow customers to book a kayak for a given period of time by selecting estimated pick up and drop off time, number of kayaks, additional equipment to book (like number of oars, waterproofs, survival kit, etc.). It also obviously includes payment functionality, where credit and debit card payments on checkout are channelled directly to the company’s receiving bank’s systems for authorisation and collection. The Web server is backed by a MySQL database running separately on its own Linux host.
The Task / Deliverables
Taking into account the scenario specifics with regard to system platform(s), service(s) and application(s) describe in detail how you would (re)configure for security the Linux and Windows servers as well as the relevant services (HTTP, MySQL). Do not forget refer to changes that need to be made to the default firewall and SELinux configuration (ultimately, if no changes were made after installing HTTP and MySQL, neither of the services would be accessible or even it would fail to start). As a starting point assume both servers are installed in their default configuration whilst all relevant services MUST be installed, configured secured from scratch and then secured appropriately.
Please make sure that you provide a coherent, likely-to-work in real world solution. Your implementation examples MUST include relevant system commands, refer to relevant configuration files and options, etc.
Grading Criteria for Each Lab Report Within the Logbook Document

Technical depth and correctness (60%): Level of technical detail must be at least comparable to course lectures. Where a topic has been covered fully or partly in the lectures, the student will have to demonstrate a greater depth of understanding and incorporate a greater level of technical detail. Each out of the three elements of the final deliverable (audit up to 20%, backup up to 20% and restoration up to 20%) will be assessed from the point of view of conceptual and practical technical.

Organisation of the material (20%): Suitable sections and subsections; Introduction, Conclusions and References MUST be present and well written.

Presentation (20%): Well formatted, correct English, good diagrams etc.

Do not copy and paste material from books, the Internet or each other, it is likely that this will be detected and you will be reported for plagiarism. Any borrowed material must be clearly identified as such and accompanied by a reference to the original source. You will only gain marks for your work, your original ideas, opinions, conclusions based on your literature review and any investigation you have performed. Copied and referenced material does not gain any marks. You are not expected to collate pieces of text, you are expected to research, think, reach conclusions and present your work.
Assessment Criteria
