You should be fluent in the language of most major health documents produced about/by the country. If you already have some knowledge of the country that is a big plus.
Question 1 (~100 words): What country will you be focusing on this quarter and why?
Part 2: Research your country’s past Global Fund proposals and concept notes
Find all of the previous funded proposals and concept notes for your chosen country. To review funded proposals, visit http://www.theglobalfund.org/en. Click on `Where we invest’ (along the top). Under Countries, select your country. On your country page, look for the Documentation header. Under Documentation, look under the PROPOSAL and CONCEPT NOTE categories. Proposal is what they used to call applications for funding; now they are called Concept Notes. The different numbers and letters in the Proposals tell you when they were made (the lower the number, the earlier) and what disease (H=HIV, M=Malaria, etc).
Reading the summary section in each proposal and concept note is a good way to efficiently understand the country’s prior applications.
Question 2 (~300 words): Write a critical synthesis of what you learn from reviewing your country’s previous proposals and concept notes, including:
What problems have your country’s applications focused on addressing?
What did you learn about making a successful application? Think particularly about how the summary efficiently connects a problem to a solution.
What types of interventions has your country proposed to the Global Fund in the past?
How have your country’s applications evolved over time?
Part 3: Research and pick a disease
Next, do some preliminary research on the disease profile of your country. The Global Fund gives money for three diseases: HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Reliable sources of information on these diseases include the World Bank HIV data (Links to an external site.), World Bank TB data (Links to an external site.), and WHO Malaria repository (Links to an external site.), but you can use other sources if you prefer.
Question 3 (report the numbers): Find the following disease statistics for your country, for the most recent year possible. Provide the source (website link is acceptable) for each number you report.
HIV Prevalence (% of people infected at a given point in time; often reported for adults 15-49)
Tuberculosis Incidence Rate (new cases per year, often reported per 100,000 people)
Malaria Incidence Number (new cases per year , total number)
